OK...I assume nobody has tried this since the time that you guys came up with the in-line thermostat mod, but has anyone ever tried to fabricate a housing to accept a 180 degree thermostat (i.e.- a Chevy), but still functionally allow the coolant to follow the stock routing?

I'm sure it wouldn't be cost effective given the existence of the in-line mod, but I'm curious how the results would differ if we changed the thermostat from stock to a 180 and all else remained the same...

I am doing this mod this weekend. I pretty much replaced everything in the cooling system and was still getting temps from 208 to 226 idling in 45 degree weather. I can't imagine anything more "catastrophic" than slipping the liners from overheating. Which has happened to me 2 weeks after I bought my Disco 6 years ago. This is my 2nd engine in my Disco and I've spent 2 years chasing a ghost on why it runs so hot at idle. This is hopefully the final fix and I can't wait to see the results.
I hear you. I have a new long engine from Turner with the flanged liners and a new radiator waiting to go in. I already have a new water pump installed along with a genuine LR fan clutch.

I've had the in-line thermostat in my car for over a year and 15K miles. No problems at all.

I installed a new radiator, did the inline modification and switched to green coolant (along with installing a new engine and AC Cond.) I installed a 195 deg t-stat. I'm getting a temp swing between 195 and 204. I have to find a part number for a good 195 t-stat or use trial and error.

I have a Stant 45359 fitted. I figured it would perform like a 45358 except 15 deg. warmer. I'll try the 45358 and see what happens.
