I lived in Overland Park for a few years in the late 90's (BTW - great people in the mid-west!). I learned to take the warnings serious.
Moving back to the south - I've come to understand why there are so many injuries around here during bad storms:
In the midwest, people act with common sense with the NWS issues a tornado/severe storm warning. In the south - it's different: During a recent NWS tornado warning I HAD to leave my home for a work-related emergency. I was amazed....there were people everywhere...shopping, going to the Y for their workout, etc. I'm talking the sky was that green color, swirling winds, rain, thunder, etc. No wonder storms like that cause so much injury and loss of life here - people are too stupid to take shelter.
However: let there be a forecast for 1/2 inch of snow and everyone here raids the stores for bread and milk, then huddles together at home awaiting the big snow:banghead:
