Knocking sound from the engine

Everything started to happen to the disco, first it was a bad ground causing it to not work properly, then it fixed itself then the engine started to shut itself out at idle, and to sound like a crapy old truck, so I took it to the shop, fixed the exhaust leak, ( now it purrs like a cat) ordered the brake pads and the rotors from tire rack for all of the corners, got the right part numbers , but once trying to install them they would not fit, did not have the holes for the abs, so only pads were installed, performed a tune up, and the knoking sound almost disapeared completely only sound for the first 2 minutes then it disapears, could this be lifters problem? and if it is how har are they to get to? are they at the top of the engine when you put it appart? may be valves? thank you for lisening(reading) I feel better already after venting a little, any help is appreciated...Cheers

PS thank God for DWeb and for its back in action

If the sound disappears after 2 minutes then the cause is definitely lifters. The bad lifter needs some time until it is primed. Once you stop the engine the oil leaks out of the lifter and is empty again when restarting the engine. You can live with this problem until you keep hearing the knocking sound continiuosly, even when you are driving. That is when you must change your lifters. It is not a difficult job. You only need to take off the intake manifold and the cylinder head covers. Loosen the bolts for the rockershafts and remove the pushrods. Then you can take out the 16 lifters.

Great news thank you PHARAOHDISCO, I'll just wait, altough the mechanic told me to wait a few days afetre the oil change and tune up that we performed, and the noise seems to have disapeared, only a few seconds when cold now, but everything else is good, feels like a new truck after tha exhaust leak was fixed, and gas consumptions is also great, today Im at 190 miles, and before the tank would be empty by now, but is showing a bit more than half a of the tank I let you know after the whole tank is gone, thank you again, Cheers
