Land Rover "split up"...

According to Autocar, Jaguar Land Rover plans to shift from two brands, Jaguar and Land Rover, to a “House of Brands” strategy with four distinct brands. That plan would see Land Rover split into three families of vehicles: Range Rover, Defender and Discovery. What’s unclear is how Discovery would be positioned within that setup.

Now departed JLR CEO Thierry Bolloré told Autocar he believed Discovery does have a role to play.

“It has always been a very family-oriented model and we want to enhance that,” Bollore told Autocar. “It needs to have many of the best characteristics of our luxury models, but with the emphasis on practicality and accessibility.”

But defining that role could be challenging as the Defender has encroached on the Discovery’s niche and hoovered up its sales underneath the Range Rover. AutoExpress suggests the Discovery may end up moving upmarket to be positioned above the Defender on price

They’ve been kicking this around for 20 years now. I think it’s only become harder to delineate the different lines. This isn’t the old days where a Defender is primitive, Disco upmarket, and RR luxury - you can option them all out with the latest tech and creature comforts. The D5 is a good vehicle from everyone I know with one and honestly seems like a good value. The styling leaves much to be desired and the 130 will certainly get the nod for the ‘looks’ over the D5 for the masses. The Discovery should have a place in the lineup but they sure haven’t made a spot for it

I do not understand why anyone purchases JLR products. There's many options just as comfortable, more reliable, and with much larger dealer networks. They offer nothing unique.

I don't disagree completely.

After seeing a steel wheel 110 up close at my daughter's school however, I do think the Defender is unique.

I'm not saying it has the cool factor it's ancestor posseses, but it's definitely not designed with the same aesthetics as the car-based-things they call SUVs these days.

They're the REI of SUVs. Expensive, pretentious, and mostly for show. If I was going to buy an SUV in that realm, I'd opt for a Yukon AT4 - a better vehicle all around. I'm glad there's enough dipshits volunteering for the JLR wealth redistribution program so techs like Stew can make a living though.

Thanks for thinking of us. We were given the opportunity to give back our jaguar franchise in order to get a higher allotment of Rovers. We jumped at that. Now we have to service them for 5 more years but we will no longer sell them.

That's a behemoth of a vehicle though.

If you're looking for offroady mid-sized, what other options are there besides the wrangler, bronco, 4runner, defender and G-wagon?

New Bronco is a hell of a lot of fun off road and carries the torch of rugged fun 4x4s about as well as one can expect in our domesticated modern world. Yes, the new Defender fits the REI, Patagucci, Aspen market best, I just think it's a retarded impractical market.

Personally I'd go with the short bed Tacoma before the 4runner. I have the long bed and it's impressive the amount of aftermarket add-ons available.

Lexus GX.

If I had my druthers I’d have a 16+ 200. But there was nothing better for the money than my LR4. Sure, I could have got a beige on beige GX460 with 100k more miles but… meh.

Im not sure about those GM trucks anymore. Im still not sure what’s going on with those transmissions while ZF transmissions are still bulletproof.Im also not a fan of molded plastic dash panels. In my $18K Cruze I can get over it. In a $70K truck it’s gonna bug the shit out of me.

The newest ones are nice. It’s everything up to 20? 22? That are the same as 2013.

The 6 speeds are fine, the 8s are junk, not sure about the 10 yet as it’s too new. It’s actually built by Ford (10R80). Ford was using all ZF transmissions in their trucks for a while and decided they’d make their trucks shittier so they went to their own design since it worked so well in the past for them.

I saw a shit ton of Chevy trucks parked in a remote lot for a local Chevy dealer. I was looking at the stickers. I saw 6 speeds behind all the 5.3’s and the bigger engines had the 10 speed.
Someone told me someone bought 7,000 trucks in the Chicago area. The guy said they were getting shipped all over the country. Who would buy 7,000 trucks?

FIL has a well optioned Sierra and I’m not too impressed with it. He’s had a lot of dumb little things go wrong with it that folks would rip LR for if it happened on a new Rover

Have they figured out how to make a frame that doesn't turn into Swiss cheese when mixed with water?

the LC frames seem a little better, but everything I see around here is crusty AF in short order. I’d never buy a used local Toyota, my stepdad’s 13 FJ is pretty bad.

Yes they have. There is no doubt they had issues with this. They have replaced a lot of frames, which kind of surprises me. Seems it would be cheaper to just give them a lease vehical or something. But owning a Toyota and being in that world I've come to find out they excel at the mechanical, the cosmetic not so much.
