Has anyone heard of any options?

I am tired of seeing that shapeless blob on the upper tailgate, and replacing the bulbs after so many slams.

I can simply take it off, but I'd rather have it - and roughly where it is. I may buy some red LED square panel and double-side-tape it to the glass.

I did something similar on my D1 (a-la-Cadillac, two vertical LED strips near the edges of rear glass), but it looked a bit cheesy.
Pulled the housing yesterday, it is too beat up for long-term use.
The 6" red LED big rig marker lights may be just right, though. I'll take a look today.

Yeah.
I went through a few options; there are 2"x6.5" oval big rig LED lights, but they would be way too bright for a third brake light. Imagine staring at it at your eye level 10 feet away.
So I bought a set of red LED strips, cut them, mounted on a piece of plastic which in its turn is double-side-taped to the window.
If I don't like it, I'll redo it. One option is to mount pieces of LED strip right on the red lens of the factory light, but it will rattle itself loose.
