lock-up clutch 2004 D2

I define myself as a newbie with automatic gearboxes, because I made the most of my driving with manual gearboxes.
Recently I did a trip with my TD5 auto D2 and suffered from a gearbox temp light when doing great slopes with great height. This is, from 2400 meters to 4300 meters, for instance. I understand that this temperature is coming from the torque converter.
I´m afraid that Td5 engine was not able to do the work in direct drive, so I did select "3" to force it to drive at more than 2200RPM.
Here comes my question: If lower speeds are selected: does ZF gearbox connect its lock-up clutch? Or this is only a "direct speed device"?
(Scuse me for my eventual spelling errors)

Thanks in advance & Regards

I read somewhere that they only lock up in D, but both my D2 and P38 lock up in 3rd as well.
I don't know much about diesels, but with petrol engines i think shifting down manually while climing hills is a really good idea. The higher RPM is probably good for transmission cooling as well.

The last time Rover imported diesels into the U.S. was when the Beatles were on the Ed Sullivan show. A really big show.
