Looking at a 2013 LR4 - main areas of concern?

Oh Bill,

Let me entertain you.
We drove from San Diego to Mammoth Lakes on Sat. - 420 miles. Upon arrival - noticeable gas smell. I chalked it to 9k ft difference in elevation and went to sleep.
Next morning - once you start the truck, it smells of gas. And there are drops of it on the protection plate under the tank.
Dan Kemper called it correctly in 10 minutes and told me what broke and what part to buy. It's on top of the gas tank.
Have some tools but not much, but ACE hardware is close by. Need either firewood or some jackstands - you don't want to pull the tank laying under an EAS truck.
Fast forward.
Local shop pulls the tank and JBWeld epoxies the crack in the filter housing (that we'd assume to be fuel pump housing in the tank). Charges me an hour.
Putting "Mammoth Lakes" in delivery address changes Amazon's delivery from "one day" to September 15.
LR Reno has the part at 2.5x the price, but won't sell over the phone and won't overnight ship. They could work on it, but schedule uncertain and they would need at least six hours to do pull and reinstall the tank. Not knowing that I already had a conversation with the parts department, service manager tells me it's a very high-demand part and it is unlikely they have it in stock. I tell him they have it and I know it.
Now how to get it... 162 miles between Mammoth and LR Reno. Judging by mileage and dashboard indicators, about 10% of gas goes not into the motor. I have the newfangled Expedition Exchange fire extinguisher, but it is not encouraging.
Mammoth-Yosemite airport is closed, and so are ALL car rental places around.
So...
My son to the bailout - the part comes from Hornburg Land Rover in Beverly Hills, at 4x the Amazon price, delivered to Mammoth Lakes in a rental Grand Cherokee.

Don't get me wrong, when these trucks run, they are the cat's meow. Better than Jerry McGovern's 110. But when they stop...

I will be proud of our Land Rover family if LR4 comes home not on a flatbed.
Wow. I have a lift tied up at work right now with a leaking flange. People traded out of it because of it. Now it's ours. Blue I could get you the info on this one if you are interested. It's kind of far I know. But I think you should look for a L322. But look for an 08 or better still an 09. With the 4.4. Not the 4.2 supercharged. That is and probably always will be my favorite Range Rover.

As I drove the D1 this morning, it occurred to me that this truck required ONE flatbed ride in 21 years and 247 thousand miles of my custody - because of a failed POS S-10 parts-store steering pump.
Maybe I shouldn't part it out yet.

I never saw a fuel pump flange fail until I moved to California. We would see them at least once a week and I’m surprised Land Rover didn’t do a recall because of it. I wonder if the California has caused them to deteriorate quicker than other areas or if I just never happened to see one on the east coast.

I think there is something coming down the chain right now. Something on a Jag I had to order parts for. I'm with you though. I havent seen it untill recently. Right now one of my guys has a lift tied up with the one thats leaking, another has one of the wires burning up in the fuel pump electrical connector part of the flange. Lots of flange issues it seems. I think I told you about a car a couple years ago that was throwing a fault because the fuel pump dwell was too high. I sold a pump and flange but the service adviser decided to sell just the pump cause I was just crazy or something like that. He got to pay me for putting the flange in a week later. I thnk the check valve for holding fuel up in the system is in the flange, not the pump.

Land Rover San Diego’s $372 (and that’s a discounted price because I’m cool) PPI, besides saying it’s one of the best they’ve seen, came up with 3 issues:
1. Brake fluid looks a little dirty, recommend flush at next service.
2. Air filter is a little dirty and could use a new one.
3. Starter motor sounds a bit funny, let’s sell you a new one.
But nothing really need to be done, we were just searching for something.

I think I’ll buy it tomorrow, if we can hash out the details. Peter, we’ll have to grab a beer when I fly in to pick it up. You just can’t touch it, you’ll break something.

Do you still have my digits? Ping me whenever you're in town. I can give you a ride to the dealer if you want.

That would be awesome, thank you!

I’ll PM you, I put my phone through the washing machine a few years ago and lost all my old contacts.

I’m about 25 miles from Gila Bend. Had to pull off the 8 because I’ve hit a haboob and severe cross winds ripped the drivers side A pillar trim loose. Wish I had my duct tape!
