I hate to beat a dead horse regarding timing chains but want to get a little more comfortable with those issues. Have the opportunity to pick up a higher mileage 11’ LR4 for a good deal. Know the current owner who’s had it for the last 50k miles and taken very good care of it, including the shorter oil change intervals. There have been no signs of timing chain noise. I understand negligence in service intervals is a major contributor but didn’t know if problems ever cropped up when the correct intervals are followed. Basically what’s the risk of future issues if there are no signs now and proper maintenance continues

It's just a noisy engine when everything is great. The fuel system makes noise too, normal. When you have both high pressure fuel pumps fail its quiet as hell, won't run for shit. All of them would benifit from new design tensioners and guides. That helps a lot. The water pumps make a lot of noises when they get loose. I've seen the first design pump get so loose it grinds metal off the inside of the pump body and fill the cooling system with metal shavings.

But this engine is going to be a bit noisy all the time even when everything is updated.

Appreciate the comments. I’m starting to think the timing chain guide failure is the ‘slipped liner’ of the 5.0. It happens but not without preceding issues or nearly as much as the internet would have you believe

They rarely fail to the point of skipping a gear out of time kind of failure. Sure it happens sometimes, I just have to believe that it was noisy as all hell before it skipped time. Most normal people would have stopped driving.

Installed the Tactical 4x4 gas tank skid today. Ordered a T4x4 rear bumper with swing away spare and a ProSpeed roof rack from Lucky 8 yesterday. Guess I’ll go ahead and order an ARB front and winch it up while I’m at it. Going to need to find a new helper though. This guy fell asleep on the job today.

Still waiting on the roof rack and rear bumper. I did install the XLifter air suspension module though. Pretty cool little gadget. I have it plugged into the front 12V socket for now and I need to free up some time to solder in a barrel jack connecter somewhere out of sight.

Bumping this one. Talking to a dealer about a 2013 LR4 now, one owner, under 50k miles looks like decent service history. I know water pumps were (are) a thing on these motors, this one had one replaced at 10k miles. Anything else I should be looking at? With that low of mileage I would think there isnt that huge a possibility that it would get too fucked.

Just to make sure I convey my feelings properly:
An LR4 is a very capable, comfortable, and otherwise beautiful vehicle, ...
That I will never, under any circumstances, trust on an extended trip.

Just sayin'...

tbh anything has potential to fail on a long trip, regardless of the badge that’s on the front. My 99 Civic failed randomly and fried the distributor on my commute a couple years ago, not long my buddy’s brand new durmax went into limp mode towing a trailer on vacation.

bless my everlasting naïveté.

You must have forgotten "Above and beyond."
A Land Rover will fail "Above and beyond" usual means of fixing or recovery.
It blows my EE mind that electrical/electronic stuff can be less reliable than mechanical. Yet it is, and Land Rover proves it year after year.

And no, LR failure rates are above and beyond even Ford's (from which a lot of electrical components is derived).

I just did over 500 miles down to Mexico and back with the whole fam damily. I had your post about your LR4 failure in the back of my mind the whole time! My 2013 performed flawlessly, including several full-throttle runs up the sand dunes. I would have never heard the end of it from wifey if I had problems.

Its part of the game we play. I never had to worry about my Silverado, but I fucking hate driving that thing any more than half an hour.

This is true.
I am resigned to rent either a Durango or a Sub for any extended family trips. Too bad that getting a 4x4 version is hard in San Diego.

I just took my 2011 on it’s first road trip and had his words in the back of my head, too. 500 miles up, 2 fuel stops, 90MPH on the cc for most of the 395. No issues (knock on wood), but I figured it a decent stress test while I still have extended warranty.

Easy on 395. I can't remember seeing _that_ many speed traps and CHP vehicles.

Did you see these guys, by chance?

Yeah, low-hanging fruit, but I couldn't resist.
