I've been out of the bicycle world for some time, still hanging onto my 1997 or so Haro Mountain bike. I'm looking for a bike for my son, 7 years old, fairly tall for his age. Prerequisites are NO coaster brake 20" bike, with either single gear or capability of locking him into a gear. He's not ready for shifting yet, just learned to ride without training wheels. Quick searching looks like the Haro ZX20 fits the bill, just don't want to break the bank. So, any bike guys on here have any recommendations? Thanks in advance.

just get something basic, he will grow out of it anyhow. the haro looks good but the riding style/position might not be best for learning to ride. bmx setup is different than traditional bike setup, specifically the steering.

No specific model recommendations (have no idea about kids' bikes), but I would recommend looking at local CL, since there are usually tons of bike deals on there. Why pay a new sticker price, when you can get a good bike and test it, etc. for less? Just a thought.

For BMX, check out Danscomp.com

A friend of mine recommended Sunday bikes for my son (he's 10). I got the 2011 Young Pro (on sale now at $549). It's a very good bike and will last my son a loooong time. There are others bikes, more and less expensive.

Also, shipping is cheap ($25) and fast.

Go cheap for now.

Once the little guy figures out what kind of riding style he likes (this will take a few years). be it, Bmx/Freestyle or wants to go mountain bike. Then you can start throwing down the $$ and customizing the bike or bikes.

Bikes are like our Rovers.... Once you get into 'em and figure what your looking for and want to do, the customization effect follows. Sometimes in a bad way...

I've been looking at Craigslist but just haven't seen anything yet. Tom, I'm only in Japan on the odd number days. What ya got? Coming up to Knoxville this weekend?
Thanks for the tips. Still need to find one without coaster brakes if the haro is a no go. Sunday bikes outta my budget.
On an aside note, I looked on eBay and saw an NOS frame of my old bmx bike from back in the day(Vector)for $1200. Danng I probably traded my bike for a stack of baseball cards or something. I had so many nice bikes and had no idea

There is nothing wrong with the Haro you posted.. it's just that, kids will be kids. not put the bike away, throw it down, crash it, leave it out in the rain and so on. hell, we all did it. that's why I say go cheep, till he learns to respect and take care of it. not saying he won't. just think back to when you were a kid, and what you did with your bike.. Then spend the coin later down the road.

I'm old now and bought a comfort bike form here, I had never heard of them till I searched for a style I wanted, and they had it (i'll buy from them again). They do have kid's bikes, but you might have to do the wallyworld thing for now to get by for a couple of years.

Still wish I had my old stuff ie: CW, Haro, Redline, GT. The good old days.
