LR3 footwell pond

I have developed the seemingly inevitable driver's footwell puddle on my LR3. Perhaps coincidentally, perhaps causally, this started to happen soon after I had my windshield replaced. Living in Seattle where we have weather phenomena called atmospheric rivers, I need to resolve this issue before my truck turns into a fishbowl. Having done cursory research, the first thing I checked was whether the sunroof drain hose was intact and in place at the hole where it exits through the body panel down by the brake pedal. All good there.

Before I lower the headliner to inspect the drains and plumbing around the sunroof frame, is there anything else I should eliminate? I haven't yet checked the continuity of the drain using the weed whacker string trick, so that's a potential next step. As is checking the reed valve or whatever the terminus of the drain hose is called on the outboard side of the footwell.

The headliner above the visors is getting damp during sustained rain, so something seems amiss in that vicinity. Any other suggestions for inspections before I go further?

First, reading your post, no leaks... windshield replaced... leaks. Occam's razor.

If you can let the vehicle sit cover the sunroofs with a tarp or plastic thus isolating them. See what happens.

Common sense man, don't try to make it rocket science.

If the water is on top of the carpet it’s probably coming in between the windshield and the cowl cover. See if your pollen filter is wet. Look at the edge where the plastic cowl cover meets the windshield. If it’s not tight to the windshield water comes into the heater box and out onto the floor.
In my experience if it’s A pillars or sunroof drains it usually ends up under the carpet.

Run a strip of electrical tape along the base of the cowl at the windshield. If that’s the culprit can replace the cowl or pick up some nicer windshield trim tape at the auto parts store, which is what I’ve done on mine

Additional information I should have mentioned initially: after the windshield was installed I replaced the cowl with a new part. The old one was faded and slightly warped and had gaps between the plastic and glass. Now it sits flush. Similarly, the rubber seal along the leading edge of both A-pillar trim pieces was cracked and deteriorated, so I just replaced those with new pieces on Saturday. I inspected the filler strip at the top of the windscreen and that looks like a good seal. Regardless, the top edge of the windscreen is below the headliner, so that shouldn't be the culprit.

So, to recap:
  • New windshield
  • New cowl
  • New A-pillar trim (hasn't rained yet since installation)
  • Sunroof drain exit hose in footwell is intact and secure
Symptoms:
  • Headliner is damp
  • Water in footwell - the whole thing was soaked, so I can't tell if the water came in from under the carpet or above

So if the new windshield is leaking you can prove it like this.

spray soapy water around the edges of the windshield like your checking a tire for a leak. Then take a blow gun with a metal shaft( the ones that have a rubber tip you can pull off) and get the outlet close to the edge of the glass from the inside. Basically blow compressed are at the inside of the sealing surface while watching for bubbles from the soaped up outside.

Sometimes the drains are plugged and water sits in the tray. Then it can get out of the tray.
To make sure they all drain I put water into the tray with the sunroof open and make sure it hits the ground. Pull that right side vent out of the fender and pull that piece of foam out of there. You can see the right front drain sticking out into that opening in the fender. See if cutting a little off that will open it up some. The foam gets frozen and restricts that drain. So shitcan it.

Good suggestion. Passenger side footwell feels dry. Is the driver's side drain outlet behind the fender liner? What you describe cutting is what I've also heard referred to as the reed valve.

The drivers side is the side that breaks off where it passes thru the body. Behind the kick panel at the base of the A pillar.
If you pour a little water into the tray it should run out behind the left front tire.
There’s 4 drains. One in each corner.
I wanted to mention that if you leak check the windshield like I described don’t go full tilt on the compressed air. Just gently blow the air at the sealing area.
If you find a clogged drain blow it out from the bottom with that same blow gun, put the rubber tip back on it for that.

Tugela: if you are still visiting this site, I have puddling in the passenger well of my 2016 LR 4; and it is obvious that the right front drain is blocked. I have an excellent tool, a one 32nd inch cable with brush on penetrating end (product name is ICELI). it is 60 inches long, and I can get it down the A pillar 52 inches before I hit a hard stop. I've taken off the air intake grate, and as you recommended, removed the installation. But I cannot see anything that looks like the end of the drain hose, which I had hope to find and if necessary reverse the probing exercise. Is there something unique about the 2016 LR 4; I know the end of the drain was there on my LR 3? Any suggestions much appreciated. Thanks, Mackie

Thanks for the note, but I don't know enough about the LR4 to offer advice here. If you haven't already looked, there may be a YouTube video detailing this. I was able to isolate my leak to a poor installation job on my replacement windshield. This auto glass company did shoddy work that has come to light in a number of ways, unfortunately. Good luck finding your drain, maybe someone else can point you in the right direction.

Tugela, can you share what you learned the windshield installer did incorrectly? I have a windscreen that needs to be replaced and want to be sure I point this out.

I haven't taken it back yet so I can't pinpoint it exactly, but water is somehow getting in along the top of the glass.
