So, last week the low coolant light came on. 24K miles. All said and done it took 2qts to bring it to the cold fill level. No signs of coolant on the floor or sticky mist on the engine/hoses. It's at the dealership now so we'll see what they say they think it is. My concern is the water pump shaft seal is failing. Seems like that's what happens to a lot of the SCV8's.

Any thoughts?

It could be the water pump or the manifold pipe. I can't explain why, but all Land Rovers seem to consume a small amount of coolant over time without ever having an actual leak. I wouldn't be too worried about it if they don't find anything and just top it off. If you can't smell coolant in the engine bay, it probably isn't leaking.

what jymiejamz says; my 08 LR3 seems to 'sip it slowly' somewhere. I suspect a hose given I can smell it on certain, very hot days.

In your case the thermostat housing is probably leaking slightly. If you look down from the top you can probably see the dried coolant residue on the housing where it bolts to the head. Also, you should replace the bleeder with a metal hose barb.

That or the plastic bleeder near the EGR is getting ready to let go. I think these cooling systems work air out of themselves pretty slow. On the 5.0 if you see stains on or near the vacuum pump at the lower right, then it's probably your block coolant outlet. What Jymmiejams said. If it's your water pump then it will be wet on your belt tensioner. You can see down in there from the drivers side looking down under the fresh air inlet.

A bit of a thread hijack: Jimmy and Stew, how are the LR4's aging? Or to put it another way, if Santa brought my wife an LR4, would I want it to be the 5.0 or the SCV6?

Thanks Jimmy. I spoke to the service manager on Friday and they also feel like the SC is making an unusual noise and have decided to replace it as well. Nice that this is all under warranty but in the back of my mind it sucks that could all happen again outside of my warranty some day.

Jimmy, whats the score card on these SC'ers?

It isn't the supercharger than fails, it is just the nose of it. Very common failure and there is an updated part. I've probably replaced 50 or more. I've never seen two failures on the same vehicle.

Smelling coolant again. We've put some longer than usual hours of travel on this LR4 this summer with legs between 8-10 hours. Last week i smelled coolant, so I check the level in the morning when things are cold. Sure enough, the level was a couple of inches below the cold mark. We topped off and I checked again this week, 500 miles later and the res is almost empty. No fluid on the ground and the smell is faint. So, back to the shitty Rover cooling system chalkboard again.

what the total mileage? If you haven't had the crossover pipes done, those are probably the culprit.

Mileage 103, crossovers, and second WP (first WP at 22) were done at 86.
