LR4 tire questions

So, i take it stock LR 18in wheels will NOT fit a 2011 LR4 from what I have read.

Has anyone tried running 255 /65 R19 tires? The Johnson Rods site says you shouldn't go over 31.5 on a LR4 or they will rub. Anyone know how badly and where they rub?

Thanks,

That is a new tire size just released and will be the 19” size on the defender. I’ve not heard of anyone running them yet and not sure if anywhere even has them stocked yet. IIRC the LR4 will rub on the frame horn at the back of the front wheel well. A decent number of folks have fit a 32” tire but not sure of the specific mods they’ve done to fit

You could also consider a 255/60/19. I’ve had these in the Goodyear Wrangler AT for about a year now. They do have their pitfalls (weak sidewalk and load rating) but I’ve been pleased with them for DD and light trail duty

255/60R19 seems to be the largest tire you can use before tires start rubbing on the front control arms and front framerail ends.
When I first had them installed, they fit-tested them and found to be within 1/8" of the LCAs.
It is not a bad size at all, but the choices are slim. I am running the same tires as Howski - wore out two sets already at 109 kmi - and I am pretty happy with them.

Forget about ever airing down off pavement, though. None of 255/60R19 are E-load-rated.

Yeah, shit.

I was hoping that OEM 18in rims would fit as I have a set and the 19in tire selection is horrible...

I could always spend the $$$ on the 18in Compmotive rims that Johnson Rods sells but I dont really want to spend the money on them right now. I need decent A/T's for it as I launch a boat on a ramp that requires 4x4 and dont want street tires on it.

You can use spacers. I don't see how 18in Compomotives can fit without extra offset, anyhow.
I am also curious about Terrafirma 18in steel wheels - steel rim could just clear the brake calipers. Too bad most TF products seem to be sub-par.

I use the stock size 19" rims and Continental 4X4 all terrain for everything from snow, ice, dry and slick boat ramps. Have not missed a beat in 9 years and second set. not cheap but loads aren't either. I used to have limited slip on ramps, not the best, but the LR4 in first program for grass, gravel, snow works great. Have not slipped on and ramp yet in 9 yrs.

pray tell!
Long story short, found a great looking 11 HSE with relatively low miles at a local Ford dealer. It drove great and didnt show any major signs of issues. When we were going through the purchase process I remembered that there was a CEL on in one of the pictures. I asked the sales guy to have it checked out before we completed the deal and he said they didnt have a chance to do a full inspection of the truck yet because it was such a new trade in. We agreed on it, and put it down on paper, that if the CEL came on within the 40 mile OBD reset distance that they would fix the issue. He said it was an evap code and had put on a new gas cap to fix it. A day after we brought it back the code came back, so back we went. 3 weeks later we got the truck back after they checked every sensor and gasket between the gas cap and tank, and replaced a brake hose because they somehow broke it off. (blamed it on corrosion, which i didnt seen any of in the area) We had it back for a whopping 24 hours and my wife went to put gas in the car and it never made it to the gas tank, just spilled out on the ground and all over her feet (not cool especially as our 7 year old was strapped in to her seat in the car). They towed it back and we went in the next day rather irritated. They ensured us that it was fixed, however we demanded that they take it to a Land Rover dealership and have it given an once over. They didnt want to do this because they were worried that they would end up spending more money on the truck and before we could say "buy it back" it the manager asked to buy it back from us. Only issue now is that we traded in our 08 LR3 in on it so we are now in the market for another vehicle....

That blows. Sorry to hear that. Best of luck in your search for another 4. Don’t be afraid to travel for the right one

On the bright side, you may just have evaded a royal calamity. Good learning experience. Hopefully the next one lives up to expectations.

I don’t see LR4 ownership coming closer to reality for me after hearing stuff like this. Plus the crappy wheel & tire options....

A little bit of an update. Some new tire options are cropping up as of late:

Toyo Open Country AT III in 255/55/19 (factory size) and 255/60/19 (31”)

Goodyear Duratrac in 255/65/19 (32”)

Goodyear Wrangler AT in 255/65/19 (32”)

I will have a set of 5 used Compomotive PD1880 for sale real soon - as soon as my new Defender arrives, I will be turning in my LR4 with the original, brand new 19" I removed and stored away when I purchased the car in 2013 and sell the Compos since they won't fit the 2020 Defender - if you are still interested. They are satin black and... well used. Quite a few scratches on the finish, but it's cosmetic damage only - these are nearly indestructible rims, and I'll let them go cheap, I am thinking around $1,000 for the set of 5 including TPMS sensors (although the frequency may or may not be compatible with yours, since there was a change from 315 to 433 MHz at some point, and I honestly can't recall what frequency mine are.) Unfortunately, I am located in Southern California.

PS Never mind, I just read your signature and sad story. I don't think the Compos will fit a D5, will they? If someone else is interested though, PM me.

Some LR4 tire talk here....

Looks like the stock 2013 LR4 tire size (with 19" wheels) is 255/55/19 which equates to 30" tall and 10.0" wide.

The 2013 LR4 I just picked up has the 19" wheels with brand new Pirelli Scorpions size 255/60/19 which is 31" tall and 10.0" wide. From what I understand, this tire size should fit fine with no rubbing.

I plan on fitting 18" wheels with a more aggressive tire tread. I'd like to go with larger tires as well, but more on that later.

Using an online calculator, the closest-equivalent overall tire size in an 18" wheel is 275/60/18 which is 31" tall and 10.8" wide,

or 255/65/18 which is 31.1" tall and 10.0" wide.

Can anyone tell me if they have used any of the above 18" sizes?

Not too many choices in these two sizes......a quick check on Discount Tire's website shows me 3 all-terrain options in 255/65/18 with only 1 E-Rated 10-ply tire which is what I've always run. This is the Toyo Open Country A/T II. Seems like a nice tire. Discount shows 1 option in 275/60/18 which ain't gonna happen.

If I bump it up to 285/60/18 (31.5" tall and 11.2" wide) then my options increase to 13 all terrain tires and 1 mud tire including E-Rated options.

Another close size is 265/65/18 (31.6" tall and 10.4" wide). Discount shows 24 all terrains and that same 1 mud terrain (Toyo Open Country R/T). Only a few are true E range tires though (and not the Toyo R/T).

Anyone know if 265/65/18 will fit? I'm guessing it will rub on the problem spots - front control arms and front framerail ends - as Peter mentions in this thread.

The other option is to make it so the bigger tires fit with Johnson Rods or an electronic interface tool such as IIDtool that allows on demand height changing while driving. I have to research those options a bit more. Not sure I want to go down that road though....
