Mean Green Starter Rebuild

Hey All,

I've been running a Mean Green Starter in my Series for 5+ years, and recently, after long road trips, it has a tendency not to start after stopping at a rest stop or to refuel. I have to tap it with a large screwdriver to get it to do its thing. A friend has suggested that it probably needs to have the grease inside of it replaced because it gets kinda gummed up and stiff with age. Has anyone ever opened up one of these babies for repair? Is it similar to rebuilding an American or Japanese starter?

Thanks,
Brian...

mean green

Brian,

had a mean green on my RR and after 4 years had it rebuilt by a local guy without any problems. same symptons - hit with a hammer to get it to turn. most don't even know that trick.

one thing to keep in mind, the very early versions did not have provisions for water to get out of it and they rusted. so, check yours and add the necessary weep holes to it so the water can drain.

MG Starter Rebuild

Hey Jaime,

Thanks for the info. I'll swap it out with my spare one and overhaul it. I'll check to see if it has the weep holes too.

cheers,
Brian...

I had the same problem with mine except it was after about 2 weeks. It failed me a couple of times and I took it off. I love the way the thing works but am afraid to put it back on. Do you guys know of anybody reputable that I can send the thing to, or do you think I can do it locally. It's for a disco but I don't think that really matters. I think I bought it from 4x4 connection and they wanted nothing to do with it. I didn't really persue Mean Green directly for warranty. Like I said, I would like to put it back on but am afraid of it failing.

Steve, I would follow up with Mean Green. I bought a MG alternator from another distributor and had some issues. Contacted MG, they asked me to send it to them, I pay for shipping and they fix it for free. Really kick ass customer service.

Sounds like they have good customer service. I wouldn't mind paying for shipping as long as the thing gets fixed. Like I said I used the thing for 2 weeks. Thanks for the info. I'm giving them a call tomorrow.
