Mid-Brake Job Calliper Question

In the middle of a front brake job on a 99 DII. When I pulled the caliper off the rubber boots/seals on the caliper were torn up and leaking fluid. (see picture)

I'm assuming this means new calipers and bleeding the system when they get bolted up?

When I did my front brakes last year I had a torn boot as well and the piston was seized with mud. I think the PO tore them up during the last brake job before I got the truck. I wound up having to replace the caliper and rotors.

That's what I figured, the piston was all the way out and the boots were shot. A quick search revealed that it's easier/simpler to just get remain calipers rather than the seal kit. And since my RRC has a blown rear diff I'm trying to get the DII back on the road ASAP. Remans were $100 each, more than online but the local parts store can have them tomorrow afternoon.

Any tips on bleeding a DII stystem or is it straight forward? Any special tools needed to bleed the system?

thanks,

Adam

The bleeding is straight forward. Fill the resevoir, pump three times, and bleed the caliper. I'ff do all four and flush the brake fluid if it's never been done. Helps to have two people.

Save the receipt for the re-built caliper, the "lifetime" waranty may require a receipt.

Sounds good.

A few of the instructions I've seen mention clamping the line before you unhook the caliper and hook the new one on to prevent a lot of fluid loss. Most refrence a special pliers but would a vise grip do the job?

A1 Cardone is a massive remanufacturer of all sorts of automotive items; they are generally good but since they do so much quality control has been an issue from time to time (ive been working for a napa store since '02...seen excellent stuff and total crap from them)
