Fried eggs are great! Other than the headlights the 996 is no shittier than any other European car. Id never own a Porsche but the 996 is a bargain considering how stupidly P-cars have appreciated.

He just doesn't like the headlights. :ROFLMAO:

Cheers,

Honestly not a big fan of the headlights but they are amazing cars. I've owned a 86 944, a70 914, a 64 and 65 356, a 68 912, a 78 911sc and a 83 911sc and still.own a 76 911s, so I know from where I speak. The 996 is way underrated and a very DD able car.

Nope. That is one thing wwwaaaaayyyyyy over blown on this car. It happens mostly to ones not driven often, nor hard and don't do oil changes often enough with good quality oil. My 996 has almost 135k, original IMS, RMS, etc. I drive often and redline it regularly. Also, I change the oil every 5k with redline or similar. Only the alternator has been an issue, changed 2xs and the electrical part of the ignition switch. Just about to install number 3, but it's a $10 VW part so...….

Statistically, it's about 10% that have suffered the IMS issue.

I thought the issue is that the bearing seal is bad, which let's oil in, which ruins the grease, which grenades the bearing?

Wow really? The Porsche boards make it sound universal, only a matter of time...

I know. Jack Raby has convinced all the M96/97 people they are screwed if they don't buy his miracle parts. They convert to spin on oil filters and other bits too.

And every year there is a better IMS, thereby reducing the old "improved" one to junk, I guess.

Once I finally do my clutch, still going strong, I'll check mine to see if the seal is intact.

I always check my oil filter for particles, nothing in there, so far.

There are 986/996s with over 300k on their original IMS (well, entire engine really)

The other concern is D chunking. That's mostly an early engine thing.

In the end, it's a fucking Porsche, and that's about as reliable as Europe gets.

I'd drive one to hell and back without worry so long as I knew it was driven and maintained properly; IMS bearing or not.

The just don't like sitting at all. You need to drive a Porsche. Doesn't matter what year it is.
