Did that thing ever quiet down? I would have grabbed the dipstick as a reflex too.
We did check the oil before we started my buddy dan hadn’t checked it with us.

It quieted down a little, now in the process of cleaning out the mass air flow sensor, throttle
Body, replacing the air filter, spark plugs all that good stuff.

just running been it and cleaning out the engine

I hope you did what I and a couple of others suggested and changed the oil and filter. Then pulled the wire on the coil pack and turned the engine over to re-lubricate it. After a long period sitting all the oil recedes to the oil pan and when first started it's metal on metal.

That truck may be unmolested, but it's definitely neglected. I hope the deal was good because at first glance it appears to need a lot of work. That being said, if you're excited and committed and patient you could transform it from an ugly duckling to a swan. Anyone who's prepared to make that kind of investment to keep a D1 running gets a thumbs up from me. Here are some suggestions learned from experience:

1. Will Tillery is going to become one of your best friends. Put his number on speed dial. His fast delivery of quality parts (used and new) at a good price with a warranty will make your Rover restoration more enjoyable and sustainable.
2. If you haven't already, download RAVE. It's free at a website called landroverresources.com or something along those lines.
3. Create a way to track your work on your Rover. If you send me your email address via PM, I'll share the maintenance spreadsheet I created for my own truck. You can adapt it for your own purposes. I know how much I've spent, what I've replaced, when, at what odometer reading, what tasks are coming due, and what projects I need to tackle now/next/later.
4. This should probably be the first suggestion - prioritize mechanical reliability and safety before you start going crazy with suspension lifts, big tires, roof racks, and other accessories. All that stuff looks neat and improves the capability of the vehicle, but there's nothing cool about being stuck in the woods because you spent your money on a LED light bar instead of a drive shaft rebuild. Start with all the fluids, then replace sparkplugs and wires. From there I'd check the cooling system, drivetrain, and brakes. Once you're confident that the vehicle can run, stop, and not overheat, then you can move on to other systems.

Also, Stew is correct about the difference between earlier and later Rover V8 liner failure. It's possible on any Rover V8 engine, but far more likely on a D2 than on a D1. I thought that was widely understood, but this thread would suggest otherwise.

IDK that it was some kind of fugazi contest. Only that it happens and should be considered when a vehicle has been left to rot.

Why is it a golf cart mechanic thinks he's so smart. Does it bother you that I'm more capable of fixing stuff than you? Does it bother you that you had a Disco 2 and had to pay other people to fix it? You know Disco 2 is a pretty easy vehicle to figure out, but for some reason you couldn't. Why is that? Are you not as awesome as you try to tell us you are?

I'm getting a lot of smoke. I changed the oil, spark plugs and wires, and air filter. I put some Lucas fuel injector cleaner when I first started it and it keeps smoking. I've been driving it around a parking lot and I drove it to the gas station and the engine made this noise. It sounded like popcorn popping when I gave it some gas. This car has been sitting up for about three years, does it just need time to burn off all the bad stuff?

What color smoke? Whitish from unburnt gas or antifreeze or blue from burning oil. If an engine is burning oil then no, that doesn't normally just go away. If its oil then it's getting into the combustion chamber somehow. Either past the rings or through the valves. Antifreeze could be a blown head gasket.... cracked block.. dropped liner.. blah, blah, blah.

I won't speculate as to what is wrong. Suffice to say it goes beyond a fuel pump. If it weren't making noise it might be as simple as a head gasket leak. That said a rebuild/replacement may be in order. Might want to take it up to the Technical discussions section.
