I've been using an antique magellan for 8 years now and need something new. My only two uses will be for snowmobiling and off-roading here in CO. I do not want to spend more than $400. Durability and battery life are important.

What do you guys suggest?

Thanks

Garmin 60CSx. You can find it for right around $400. Battery life is amazing. We had it up in the mountains under tree cover and it still worked great.

Not trying to be a wise guy. If you had one for 8 years and youre not dead or lost id buy the same one or an updated version.

Highly, highly, highly recommend the Garmin Rinos. GPS with a FRS radio built-in. You have all the advantages of a GPS, with the added utility of a two-way radio. Plus, you can transmit your coordinates to friends who have Rino units. The new Rino 530 has some very nice improvements over the previous models and is right around the $400 mark. We have been using Rinos in our hunting camp for years and swear by them...

the new quadrafillar antennae are so far superior to the conventional patches, unless the garmin you intend to use under tree cover and in canyons is quadrafillar, youre wasting money. I own both types, both portable. I ONLY use the qf antenna unit when off road, under trees or in mountains. Even in manhattan, where the skyscrapers will challenge even my roof mounted antenna; the qf unit always know where I am with WAAS accuracy. fwiw

My two GPS units are an old Streetpilot IIIc, and an Etrex Vista. Both are horridly outdated now. Still, both have served me well.

After seeing some of the new ones out there, I've got my eye on a few of them. I don't like the newer Magellens, for various reasons. I like the Garmin 76Csx for handheld and bike use, as well as the more complex things I get myself into. For the vehicle, I've got my eye on a 378. Those are the two I will most likely be replacing mine with.

Cheers,
