Hi All;
I am rebuilding my old Disco 1 engine (4.0 Litre). I was looking at the "Haynes" manual last night and in the fine print it said "camshaft bearings in the cylinder block are not renewable...a new block will be required." (2A-11, item 7-12).

Ooooops !!!! I read that a bit too late. The old ones are already out.
New ones ARE available so is there any reason they are not supposed to be re-fitted?

New ones can be fitted but they need to be line bored. Any automotive machine shop should be able to do this for you.

It's a Buick 262 ci V8. They ran it in olds omegas and whatever Buick called it's car from that platform during the early 70's. Somebody should be able to get them in for you. One time I got cam bearings from Rover and it was a tube you had to cut and drill then fit into the block.

I have the tool that you remove and install them with. That notice in the Haynes manual makes me worry there is something special about the installation.

"line-bored"? I have the installation tool with the centering cone. Is that "Line Boring"?

No that installing. Line boring it is the install of an oversized bearing, then a reamer is used on a mill to size up the hole center to cam race diameter. There are 2 different bearings sold. Ones that are oversized/undersized. Then ones that are already cut to fit. That is what you are looking for. Be careful when installing the bearings are very soft and easily mangled.

I’ve installed cam bearings and line boring was not needed. If there is major resistance in rotating the camshaft after installing new bearings that may indicate a need for line boring but you can check before installation. A reputable machine shop can check and install the bearings for you if you are not comfortable doing it yourself. The cost of acquiring the tool makes having a machine shop do it quite sensible.
