Hello all,
Been lurking for a while and finally did something about it... I recently purchased a 1998 Discovery. Mechanically it seems strong, but I do have some minor electrical\switch issues. I was able to drive it successfully from Quees, NY to Philadelphia afetr the purchase and it rode well. he BAS light came on on my way home and the rear windows stopped working. I was hopign to have this road worthy by the beginning of August, but unless I get a major financial blessing, it may be a while longer. I will try to post some pics later today...

Good luck on your purchase and congrats. Pick a good site to post up any concerns. I also have a 98 Disco. It has its problems but I still love it. ABS light should not be on after you drive over 10mph. Bring it to a certified Land Rover mechanic not the stealer(cause they will indeed rape you) and have them read the code. Real independance rover mechanics have the meter. Might be the sensor had mine done recently($280). You rear window ecu needs to be resoldered(easy fix) its located behind the glove box. Tons of post about on here with straight forward directions. Just did mine about a month ago(30 mins).

ABS is optional, pull the fuse and the light :D

if you want to "fix" it, 9/10 it's a wheel sensor. Needs to be cleaned and/or replaced. Lowwill suggestion the best ideas for that.

Rear window is probably just a switch. Try the window from the button on the rear door and see if it works.

IMO, sounds road worthy now.

Thanks for the help guys. I will try the sunroof fix this weekend. I think I will also pull the abs fuse. Miraculously, the back windows worked from the front switches last night. We got some nasty storms through here and the windows were up in time. I can't wait to get this thing on the road.

Then sell it and buy a reliable car.

Just my 2 cents.....

Lots of pros and cons regarding bypassing the ABS.

If you pull the fuse in the passenger compartment box, the OBD is not powered (on my 97).
Leave the bulb in.
That way, there is never any misunderstanding.
example:
With bulb in..
Someone else "I wrecked your car - The ABS didn't work"
You "No shit, can't you see the friggin yellow light in your face?"
Someone Else "Oh."

With bulb out...
Someone else "I wrecked your car - The ABS didn't work"
You "Oh. I disconnected it"
Someone Else "Ow, my neck!!"

There are other ways to disable the ABS. If you cannot figure out how to do it yourself you're not ready to take on the liability. Have the ABS system fixed by an experienced rover mechanic.

See here for other opinions

I pulled the 30a ABS fuse in the engine bay when the ABS pump continued running and would not stop. Also, with the ABS being intermittent, I had the unhappy experience on a number of occasions of hitting the brakes, the abs chattering away and the truck not stopping. Very scary. I was just as happy to know I had working brakes, just not abs.
As for the rear windows, my truck did the same thing. They worked 99% of the time but the odd time the rear switches in the centre console would not work - usually when it had started to pour rain and I really wanted them closed. They would work again a short time later or the next time the truck was started.

Thanks again guys. I didn't get around to any of the issues on the truck this weekend. I did notice that I have a missing bulb and cut wires on my drivers side rear bumper cap and my side marker lights need bulbs also. I keep finding more and more goodies that this thing needs. Here is a pic of the truck......

Safe thing to do is fix your abs problem A.S.A.P. Dont mess around with your brake. Truck is heavier than that honda civic in case you did not know.

you got this all backwards.. it should go

d1 owner "Oh sorry sir, I had my foot firmly on the brake pedal but it just made this pulsing feel and then my ABS light triggered, I'm sorry I don't know"

Smashed car owner "FUCKING FIX YOUR PIECE OF SHIT!! I AM SUING YOU".

d1 owner "WHAAAA?"

You see, taking the ABS OUT actually makes the braking predicable and safer. Hey, going 45MPH and locking up the brake and see what happens, see how well that ABS works.... it don't. It tries to work at 5-10MPH but by then your fucked because the brakes won't stop you.

ABS on this truck is the shittiest ABS system i've ever seen on a vechile.
