Well, it's been between 79 and 90F for the last month or so - I can't expect the truck to stay at 180F especially while flogging it uphill.
But if I lived in a colder climate, I'd likely be running a 190 or 195F thermostat, not for emissions reasons but to cook the condensation out of engine oil.

That's fine with a carb, but the fuel injection system is designed to operate at 190F.

There isn't any sequential FI system that adds fuel up to 190F. It's something like 120F when AFR isn't being made rich. Sure, I'm probably not running 14.7:1 AFR, but I'll take the 1 MPG hit. I also don't have computer controlled spark, I adjusted my timing and with running 93 my truck runs just fine. I haven't measured my AFR (and I don't really care either) because I don't have to worry about emissions testing and my motor is telling me it is running fine.

I run a standard thermostat on my d1 and d2 in Australia...as long as the cooling system is serviced never a problem even towing a 2 tonn boat up steep hills in well over 40 centigrade summer days. I monitor with scangauge II.

Cheers

At least someone in this thread has some sense. The stock cooling system in good working condition should be able to idle in the desert with the a/c on all day without overheating.

Nothing about my coolig system is different than stock, and it won't ever be. I'm just reporting on what's happening.

Mine is stock with the exception of the fan clutch. I'm fairly certain it's a severe HD Fan Clutch (installed by the previous owner) as it's much larger than the OEM Fan Clutch. I live in TX, and I've now owned 7 Rover's and not a single one of them ever overheated. I always kept up with the hoses, fan clutch, coolant, and making sure the radiator wasn't blocked or leaking.

Stu, you'd be delighted with Torque Pro.....

I finally downloaded the app and installed a $15 dongle from Amazon.

It looks great; I just have to customize it some more. I don't need 1/4 mile lap times, but I would like the coolant temperature to be on the front page of the app.

I do coolant temp, voltage, and GPS speed on one page.

That gizmo is so cool that it is distracting.
