a short while ago I posted a question concerning the oil consumption rates in DIIs other owners were witnessing. Well...I've explained mine, and luckily it's not a catastrophy!

My filter was loose! leaking everywhere!

Here's where this is really irksome. Normally I look under the car, check the parking spot for drips, etc. BUT my 03 DII has this really foolish plastic pan on the underside of the motor, shaped like a baking sheet, with a little twist off plate that sort of looks like a deck access hatch from a boat. Well this stupid little pan was holding my quart of oil! and about two cups of beach sand! (I drive the beach alot) I discovered all of this when the oil leak outpaced the beach sands ability to absorb, and the pooling oil began to blow toward the back of the motor onto the HOT cats! SMOKE! SMELL!

So here's my question, other than mask oil leaks, and provide a nice platform for sand to settle, what purpose does this POS pan serve? Is it some sort of cooling aid, forcing the fan to pull air thru the radiator rather than suck it from below? Aerodynamic necessity? Do I need this damn thing on there? Anybody take there's off? I looked at a bunch of Rover pics I've shamelessly ganked from the net and I can't find one that shows enough detail to see the pan or lack thereof.

Seems like it's purpose is to only keep Joe General Public from knowing that their car leaks oil, like any quality british machine would. Any thoughts?

I took my "POS pan" off several months ago, to make it easier to inspect under there, with the intention of putting it back on. But, of course, I never did. No ill effects. I suspect it's there mostly as a splash guard, maybe to keep mud off of the pulleys and belts.
