If you use the Subaru oil drain plugs, make sure to use an aluminum crush washer instead of the felt one that comes with it. Use some thread sealant (not loctite) and be careful not to pull the threads out on the front cover.
The earls fittings are nice because you can have good hoses made with -10 fittings and use compression fittings on the oil cooler.
Fwiw, it's best to keep the oil cooler plugged in your area this time of year. With a cooler your oil temp will rarely see 140 degrees (way too cold). Add an oil thermostat in between the oil cooler that way your oil temps stay around 180-200 degrees. http://www.summitracing.com/parts/ear-501erl?seid=srese1&gclid=CO-sh5-Q-roCFUkV7AoddwgAuw

does the crush have to be aluminum? I see more listings for copper crush at my local advance auto.I was wandering in case no one has the aluminum ones locally.

Just order some plugs from one of the used parts guys. 03-04's don't have an oil cooler. I would definitely recommend new o-rings, they leak frequently.

those plugs are actually getting very scarce. i guarantee most used parts guys have almost none (unless the used parts guy knows those plugs are not available separate from the complete front cover assembly). think about it, why would a used parts guy give up the plugs and then have a front cover that is only good for '99-'02 trucks?

previous front covers have the the return line back at the front cover where the oil filter adapter has a 'hump' which is to say a 'plug' cant seal the threads because it bottoms out on the 'hump' and not the threads.

the best way to seal those ports, is to throw away the o-ring. get some plugs from a hydraulic hose shop, along with some 18mm od aluminum crush washers. clean the front cover ports with parts cleaner. put some dieletric grease, sylglide, vaseline, whatever will hold the crush washer inside the ports, then take the plug with some thread sealant on the threads, and lock it down. the aluminum crush washer will almost never leak where as the o-ring on the stock plug will deform over time.

likei said, the ONLY used parts guys that would know what the OP needs is Joel or Will, and i know they know what they're doing so they would only sell the entire front cover.

fuck it, OP pm me your address and ill ship you some OES plugs for free.

That might explain why the parts catalogs show like 32 different front covers just for the 1999 D2.

32? what are the part numbers?

there is a reason there are definitely 3 different part numbers for D2 front covers….but only 1 part number for each oil cooler line ('99-'02 of course).

1) ERR 6438 for 1999 only…because the oil pressure sender is the old single prong style and the front cover has a chamfer at the leading threads which needs a crush washer and o-ring to seal properly.

2) LJR 105040 for later 1999s thru 2002….because they switched oil pressure senders which didn't have a chamfered leading thread on the front cover port. (also used on P38's)

3) LJR 000220 for 2003-2004…because Rover deleted oil coolers, which means the PLUGS that are not sold separately come installed on the front cover.

however ESR 4627 is the ONLY oil cooler feed line sold for 1999-2002 Land Rover Discovery 2's and PBP 101100 is the ONLY oil cooler return line sold for Land Rover Discovery 2's.

so if there are several different stock front covers BUT only 1 oil cooler line feed and return line available have different thread fittings?

even the 4 liter tall block at the shop out of a '97 D1 has M20x1.5 threads at the front cover. I'm not trying to start a pissing match i just honestly don't understand how even though are different front covers THERE are only 1 part number for each cooler line? if the front cover has different threads then shouldn't there be a specific oil cooler line for that different threaded front cover?

since this is the internet and verbiage must be absolutely correct, let me revise my original statements

IF you have a stock D2 that has all of it's original parts the front cover MOST likely will have M20x1.5 threaded oil cooler parts, but don't hold me to that.

Ok, so I exaggerated just a little. I didn't realize that the reason for more than one 1999 cover was the pressure sender. So are the threads different on the sender? My 1999 had the old style, single prong sender. I've seen kits to put the new style two prong sender in. They must be designed for using the newer style cover on the older 1999 engines.

Same sensor threads from what I have seen...

My guess is that adapter is for using the newer style sensor that doesn't blow out the middle in place of the single wire sensor that does blow out the middle...

The Volkswagen/Audi switches leak thru the connector too! The double pole style seem to be way more reliable regarding leaking.

That leaking switch is how a got my D1 so cheap. And also the reason a spent nearly half the purchase price trying to "fix" a problem that wasn't there.

I replaced the leaky switch with a new after make switch that always made the oil light come on at idle. I put oil pump gears and bought bearings and a bunch of other stuff before I put a gauge on it and figured out my new switch was crap.
