I can only assume that it is not the oil filter as it was completely clean up there and I replaced filter once. Removed to inspect and all was good.

LR says alternator has been drenched and will end up failing.
below the housing, where it enters the block.

you really sure its not just the gasket for the oil filter housing? thats like a $20 part and can be fixed in half an hour. It's right on top of the timing cover, so it looks like it can be the timing cover when it isn't. My truck is seeping from there (noticed last oil change) and I'm going to fix it soon.
No I believe it. That’s a common leak. It’ll take out the alternator if you don’t take care of it.

Arg. Tell my newbie LR4 skills if I can tell the difference between oil filter housing and timing cover.

LR was pretty adamant that it was timing cover. This dealer has pretty good reputation with a few owners I know.

I will watch it and look more closely. Will some kind of scope help, I really had problems looking for the source.

Probably the best way is with oil dye and a black light with the yellow goggles. But you could clean the area up with a can of brake clean and then look for the new wet oil
I’ve fucked that o ring up before. I test drove the truck and the belt got soaked and the p steering pump was slipping. It felt pretty bad.
I think it would be leaking really bad if it was the oil filter housing. Like a cow pissin on a flat rock.

If the dealership says it's been leaking for a while then either no or they do a piss poor job of inspecting their vehicles.
So two dealers one independent where I got it said no leaks at all. About a month ago. Dealer who says it has been leaking for a while is local LR dealer.

For timing cover its $600. For alternator is $1400.

Me, I'd ask the LR dealer what "a while" means. If they say a few weeks then my bad luck. If they say a few months, then like I responded to blue, either they knew it and passed their problem on to you, or they do a shitty job of inspecting their vehicles. Given the kind of dealer they are I would have to assume they don't make a habit of shitty inspections. Anyway, if the answer is "a few months" then the question becomes is it worth $2k to this dealer to not get a poor Google review.

If I did not say this, the dealer specifically said not a drip under the vehicle.

Things that make you say hmmm.....
There are no drips under my LR4. Yet, the oil leak from the front killed the alternator.
By the way, I found the alternator in a parts store in STL for less than $300, and swapped it in at the parking lot in Cedar City. You don't have to shell out $1400 if you don't want to.

You've left me little wiggle room here. How do I argue with a man that has a lifetime of experience on the subject. On the other hand this idiot made a dealer, who really didn't want to, replace an engine in his truck without getting lawyers involved. Or even threatening to.

You actually would ask a mechanic when it started leaking? So like now it’s not good enough to tell you what’s leaking, I have to tell you when it started?
You want to start some big investigation over some oil leak on a used car? I thought people bought used cars cause they didn’t want to spend new car money. We’ll guess what…it’s different than buying a new car. And if you go buy a 6 yr old Land Rover at some other brand dealer or worse yet a used car lot you’re really gonna get that USED UP car experience.
Also there are so many ways a leak could be missed, or ignored, or some poor mechanic wanted to do it but the used car manager wouldn’t do it. I would want to look at all the facts before I accused someone of being unethical.
Let’s assume he bought this at a Land Rover dealer, but I don’t think he did. But if he did and took it back in there one months later leaking oil out of that upper timing cover, they would do something for him. I would be shocked if they didn’t. No need to start an investigation and fire off a bunch of shitty reviews. Just give them an opportunity to make it right.
If he bought it at a used car lot or a Nissan dealer or some shit, he doesn’t want them fixing it anyway.

This is a grey area. I can't see the truck and I don't know LR. I do know it takes a certain amount of time for oil to leak to the point it takes out an alternator. So it comes down to the dealerships estimation of how long it's been leaking. If they say a week it's on you. If they say at least 3 months that's on the dealer. Some where in between is that area where you just can't be sure. I know this, if I'm that dealer this is something I take care of, no brainer. It's not worth the possibility of a poor review and it makes for a happy customer.

You seem a lot more concerned about this leak than the guy who owns the truck.

The place that sold the truck (an independent used car dealer) said no leaks at all. We all know how places like this operate....they were full of shit. They know that the buyer will be X states away by the time he notices and there's probably plenty of fine print to cover their ass. I bought my LR4 at a similar used car dealer 1 state away. We all know what we're getting into when we buy used.

I know this may seem odd to you, as someone who seems to look at this site as an opportunity to make fun of, call names, and belittle other posters, but I see it as a chance to maybe help others.

I think I will do the alternator myself good learning experience and seems pretty straight forward. Can't imagine doing it without jack stands or ramps though.

The only dificult part of the job is one your not thinking of before the job starts'

The small connector is very dificult to unlatch. I use a very small pair of pliers to unllatch it and pull it off. The thing that makes it so dificult is once the alternator is off the bracket, that little wire isn't long enough. so your going to have to support the alternator while your unlatching that connector.

If it gets pulled apart I can show you where to get a replacement connector with 10 inches of pigtail sticking out of it for about $80.
