The oil leak part of your problem isn't that big a deal either Bri. The small cover will slide out from under the valve cover. Someone mentioned thousands of $$ but that's not accurate. I have young guys in my shop that can do it in a little over an hour. I almost had a fist fight over who was going to get to do one.

The only dificult part of the job is one your not thinking of before the job starts'

The small connector is very dificult to unlatch. I use a very small pair of pliers to unllatch it and pull it off. The thing that makes it so dificult is once the alternator is off the bracket, that little wire isn't long enough. so your going to have to support the alternator while your unlatching that connector.

If it gets pulled apart I can show you where to get a replacement connector with 10 inches of pigtail sticking out of it for about $80.
Good words of advice. I looked at the video and didn't really catch that.

Considering that I stand to save about $1k doing myself, I may rent a bay to do it and bring a helper.

If you can get a lift that would help a ton. I’m spoiled and I would really not want to do it on my back.
While your in there I would consider replacing the idler that sits over by the alternator and has its own bracket. They fail a lot and the belt flys off and the vehicle overheats

Is this it?

Genuine Secondary Idler Pulley LR035545, 3.0 And 5.0 Liter Engines, For Land Rover LR4, Range Rover Sport And Range Rover Full Size L405 (See Fitment Years)

And

Alternator LR072764, New By Denso, For Land Rover LR4 3.0L V6, Range Rover Sport And Range Rover Full Size L405 (See Fitment Years)

I might also assume that the oil has been on the belts, although they looked clean. Assuming it might be wise to change belts as well?

Thanks for the help.

OH. What is the best DIY service manual for 2016 LR4?

I just use Topix. That might be the idler but the one I use comes with the bracket. The bracket bolts to the side of the engine above the alternator and the pulley sticks out the front.
As long as it Haden’s failed you could get away with just the pulley like that. When it fails the bracket gets destroyed

Huh. Looks like Topix is not just a simple service manual and requires a subscription or something. I hate asking such dumb questions when I do not even have a manual. RTFM has been a motto for years.

That link was to a "secondary idler".

Is it the tensioner you are talking about? I kind of doubt it since you did not mention it was tensioner.

I’ll see if I can help you with some service info. Are you looking for the alternator replacement? Or are you interested in the front cover reseal too?

LR099573 it looks like. Doesn't look like a common part.

Although I respect your opinion, I think I would notice that bracket failing And just shutdown before oveheat, no?

What do you mean by not a common part? There’s a TSB about it. Guys put on just the idler pulley. But it comes with the bracket in my world.
Why not just wait till the alternator fails before you replace that? Maybe it won’t?

Part seems only available via ebay and LR is what I meant. I will replace both. Especially if bracket is new design.

Thanks again.

I don’t know if you need to do that. Usually in cases like this Land Rover updates the part for what ever reason. Then because they don’t come out and say what the difference is in the bracket (maybe nothing) they sell all the old stock to Atlantic British. You’re probably buying a part that was destined for a JLR parts dept. But now if you want to read between the lines on that they won’t pay me to replace that idler pulley unless it’s got that new bracket on it. So is that because the new bracket is somehow stronger and better? Or is it because they think that if the idler was failing the bracket was damaged?
Either way, I can not buy that pulley without that bracket. I don’t fight it, they don’t ever seem to give us all the info. They treat us like a petulant kid, they told us to replace it and enjoy it when we don’t listen.

Bri, were you able to eventually get the oil leak sorted out?
I did. I paid to have it done. Need to get under there to confirm thier work though. I think the left a mess of the skids during the service, so need to check it out. Crazy.

So dealer says it is now oiler cooler leak .... after they replace top front timing cover. It is leaking worse now than it did a month ago. If it is oil cooler leaking now, could it have been that all along? Sheesh. Fvcking rovers.

Just the money they save being cheap. RTV is pretty good stuff, but it’s not forever.

The service manual is all digital. If you tell me what you are thinking about doing I’ll try to post some of it on google drive for you. I’m not sure there is an aftermarket or paper manual available anymore. It’s all on a website called topix

That’s the leak I told you to check. What’s weird about that leak is it always starts after it gets disturbed. So some mechanic gets blamed. If you took the shields down to do your oil change then that could have been all it took.

I think you are right.
