Overdrive install

Installing and removing the fairey overdrive is a piece of cake and well within the abilities of even the most timid of us. The following process is much easier if done on a lift but on your back is possible. Simply disconnect the linkage, unbolt the OD, and slide it out. You will see a caged bearing looking assembly that is the clutch assy. It is held on by a special nut that looks like a squat castleated nut with a bevel facing you. This requires a special tool avaiable from Rovers North ($25) to remove, as it is torqued to about a billion ft/lbs. I have been told that it can be knocked loose with a "lump" hammer and a punch, but I couldn't make it work and don't believe it. If you drop me an e-mail, I'll lend you mine for the cost of postage. Once you get this nut loose, remove the clutch and replace it with the original gear (be aware that there is a locking tab for the nut that shouldn't be reused [cheap from R/N]). Replace the cover (and gasket) and you are good to go, minus a loud whiney OD.

Do you have the coverplate (technically called the mainshaft rear bearing housing)for the transfercase and the original gear?? I assume you do. Also, make sure the bearings are in good nick.
You can loosen the castellated nut with a hammer and drift, but you have to do it from below after removing the bottom cover plate. There's supposed to be a lock tab on it, so be aware of that. Actually I should say "usually". I've seen them in all states of condition, from finger tight, to having to be chisled off (split). There is a torgue value for them, so it's better to use the tool when putting it all back together.
