Hello

my truck has 95K on it and techs from all over tell me about the slipped liner or head gasket. Somethings wrong but it ain’t that. First thing was the fan clutch which took Acetyleneto get off and ruined the water pump. Then it stayed cool for a few days but split the coolant reservoir. New reservoirand now it runs fine except it has started dump in the coolant and it doesn’t like drive-thru lines.

so when I was younger those simptoms meant a radiator flush or re core but this is plastic and aluminum. I’ve found radiators for $50 so I know that’s junk. Also changing the thermostat since it might decide to go into business for itself. What radiator do you guys recommend? I want one that will cool a D&D rebuild.

also how involved is it to change the radiator?

thanks

Assuming you don't run into problems with seized hardware, you can remove and replace the radiator in an hour or two with no special tools (other than fan clutch wrench).

I have had a Nissens radiator in my D1 for 3.5 years now. I also replaced water pump and fan clutch while I was at it. I keep an eye on coolant temp with my Bluetooth scanner and it never gets above 201F. Biggest test so far was on a 3,000-foot ascent, off-road, in low range, in triple-digit ambient air temps, with about 1,100 pounds of people/cargo inside. No problem. I'd buy another, but would probably look for an all-aluminum option first.

So far the logic is that highway speed the gasket would blow if it were attributed to a gasket. I can drive it anywhere the interstate goes until I need gas. The new clutch fan actually LOWErEd the needle about the coolant needles thickness. Also the check engine light is on and it flashes in conjunction with a silent knock but once downshifted it’s gone.

if the CEL is flashing then you have some misfires happening. pull the codes and it will tell you what cylinders are misfiring.
