Parking brake puzzled -D1

I disconnected my parking brake cable so I could raise the lever to allow the shifter console / cubby box to be removed. No problem, done it a handful of times on other D1 projects.

So, I put things back together and the next step is to reconnect the cable to the parking brake lever. I can’t get the cable back into the lever. The push rod that moves to release the lever is right in the way. I can’t figure out how to get it back or why it happened in the first.

Sorry, the picture are kind of upside down. Any idea what happened or how to correct it?

I tweaked the handle doing that once and had the same problem. Tried to bend it back but it was sketchy and ended up replacing it.

I don't get this. I did not tweak anything that I am aware of. I can get the cable back on but the button does not spring back. What is there to replace?

Just guessing this "fix" is costs more than the vehicle.

I dont even see a "replacement" for this.

My problem seems to be that the button no longer springs back.

I really wish I knew what I did to fuck this up. What a jack ass.

Shit I did not even know "pawl" before this.

Symptom I had was button would not pop back out.

If you over extend the hand brake lever without the cable attached you will bend a rod that goes from the button to the pawl. It will bend at the bottom of the grip, inside the handle. Then it will likely touch the inside of the handle and the spring will not have enough force to push the button back out.

Sticking in a screwdriver into the base of the lever you can bend it back.

Shitty part and design.
