Pick My Next Vehicle

I think I am going to give up the maintenance on my P38 H&H (2001) and D1 LSE (1998).

I need something with parts/maintenance that is easier to deal with.

2 speed transfer case, full sized spare, access height wound be awesome (not required), locker might be nice.

Availability of bumpers, sliders, etc might be nice.

Ability to tow something small.

I would say $30k.

I cannot bring myself to do a 80k power wagon or such, and wifey would need a step ladder. Nearly dead last year and on the mend, now disabled :-(.

Can't do a Taco, just seems LR is my gig.

Pick my vehicle. LR3? LR4? Range Rover? What package? What year? I am open to RR Sport, but it is the last on my list.

I don't' want to have to think too much and seek all the advice that you guys have and I do not.

Last time I solicited like this was around 2004. I had you guys pick my plate,

I still have it. Been through numerous rover redo's. The winner was MLLIGAN, @SCSL. It will go to the next do over.

I hope I get responses, with wifey on the mend, I really hope to get her out in the desert SW this spring.

Thanks a lot!

I saw that thread.

Should I do 2013?

How about newer?

Why not RR?... Other than space?

2013 gets you a couple less years of wear, Bluetooth w/ streaming, and is the last year of the V8 and two-speed transfer case. The 2014+ models have a more modern and refined interior, exterior, and electronics, but no two-speed transfer case and the V6 has less power and is more complicated for maintenance.

Going on the premise that the best Land Rover is the one you have, I'll make a plug for the LR3. Coming from a lifetime of leaf-sprung and solid-axle Rovers (literally - my introduction to Landies was crossing the Kalahari at age 6 in a Series IIa), I was skeptical of the newer models. But I didn't want to take my D1 on a 5-month, 11,500-mile pandemic road trip, so I bought an LR3 for the room, comfort, and power. I drove it coast to coast to coast, on pavement and off, and became a believer. The 4.4 V8 has been a revelation in terms of reliability and power (granted, the 4.0 in my D1 is not hard to beat for performance), the capability of Terrain Response in off-road driving with cross-linked air suspension is impressive, and the versatility of the interior is superb.

If your budget is $30K, that feels like enough to find a solid starting point, add the accessories you want (which are available), and make any repairs needed to turn it into a dependable adventuremobile, and have cash left over for the adventures themselves. With a new set of tires my LR3 hasn't yet gotten stuck and the absence of a rear locker hasn't been a limitation in my travels (although HD versions are out there with the factory rear locker). The LR4 is more refined, it drives better, it has more modern tech and conveniences, but for my own needs I prioritized the 4.4 V8 over all those benefits. 300 horsepower was plenty for driving over mountain passes with 1,000 pounds of cargo. I don't tow, so that's not a consideration for me.

Whelp..... no low range is deal breaker.

HD/LUX is ideal, right? Seems like the threads here point me at 2013 LR4.

Somebody tell me about LR4 vs RR. Should I just bag the RR idea? They do seem sexy.

HD gets you the factory rear locker and full-size spare, although you can add ARB air-lockers to any LR3/4. LUX primarily gets you the better leather which is very soft and wears well.

Luxurious and powerful, but smaller interior, much less cargo room, smaller aftermarket, and more pretentious.

Done. Love them, but need something more versatile.

Probably down to 2013 LR4. I might like something newer, but my newest driver is '01.

Need to unload 2001 P38 H&H, '98 D1 LSE, 2009 E350 EB wheelchair van high top.

Don't think I can part with the 97 F350 Crew 7.3 PSD it just too bad ass. Probably give it some love after I clean house.

Oh.... thanks for the replies. The LR3 is a consideration, but I do want as new as possible. Seems like I need to be patient for something low miles and service records.

14-16 have a two speed t case with the HD package. you also get a rear locker. look for the up down arrows on the lower right hand of the terrain response knob. if it's a blank plate, it doesn't have low range and you can move on to another. so many trucks aren't listed with the HD package or low range, so photos are your best bet too quickly move on or look into a specific truck more.

I really liked my LR3 - enough power to tow an enclosed car trailer with a Porsche inside of it, very comfortable and a great long distance road car.
The LR4 with the 5.0 engine has issues with the cam chain tensioners but it can be had with the two speed transfer case,
I had a 207 Discovery 5 TDV6 diesel that was a fantastic vehicle except for the rear hatch - wish they had done a two piece tailgate like the earlier trucks.
Over 30 mpg and a range of over 640 miles made it a perfect long trip vehicle. They don't like just being driven in town - you have to get some freeway miles on them regularly.

Crazy collection.... good for you. The new defender checks all boxes. Cool, but it scares me more than an LR4, mostly price is the issue though.

I got the 4 cylinder 110 - plenty of power and a lot less complicated than the 6 with the MHEV system. Cheaper too!
I have four Land Rovers but these three were our daily transportation that I only owned one at a time. I sold the LR3 to a friend after I bought the D5 and traded the D5 for the new 110. I have an old D90 and a couple of Series IIA Land Rovers. I've owned twenty different Land Rovers over the last 50 years and I'm really liking the new 110.

2013 V8 LR4 LUX/HD.....been extremely happy with it so far, even with a few maintenance issues. Assume crossover pipes will have to be done if not done already. My other Rovers have been a 1996 Disco and a 2004 Disco. They were fun but they were crap compared to the LR4.

Sad to say, but the LR4 will be my last modern LR. Next will be another pickup (when the market crashes) or a Grenadier. They've gone down too far down the lifestyle path. Thankfully, there are plenty of alternatives these days.

I've been following the Grenadier with interest since the initial announcement. A few of my friends in South Africa got to drive the traveling prototype recently. They were impressed, which says something coming from that old school Defender crowd that thinks the D2 is too modern. My initial enthusiasm has leveled off - there are only so many promo videos you can watch without getting behind the wheel to experience it firsthand. Like you, I'm having a hard time seeing myself owning a LR newer than my LR3. For the amount of satisfaction I get from my current fleet I am in no rush to modernize. Maybe a hybrid diesel Grenadier will be available by the time my LR3 croaks, but seeing as it's only at 165,000 miles, that could still be ten years away.

I'd like to play with a new Defender once they depreciate to my level of cheapfuckdom. The Grenader looks good too but one is years and years away for me. Would need to see a couple years of track record and then of course the depreciation would have to hit.

Wow. That makes me feel good, but my Discos have been abused. Kind of hard for me to believe you, but I know you've been around longer than me.

What rear bumper is that?
