I had a guy wanting to buy some stuff for around 500 dollars. He said he didn't have a credit card and can he send me a cashiers check. Sure, no problem. He sends me a cashiers check from PNC bank. I drive to PNC bank and say I need to cash this. No, they can't cash it. Why not? It's certified funds from your bank? Well there have been problems with forgery. I know, that's why I brought it here first place. Look it up in your computer. Sorry we can't do that, you should call the branch it was purchased at and maybe they can help you. I text the guy and get the number for the branch where it was purchased. "Hi I need to verify this cashiers check that was bought at your bank" Is it blue with red letters?" "Yes, would you like the number?" "No we can't look it up by the number, you can deposit it and it should clear in a day or two." "If that is what I am supposed to do what is the difference between this and a regular check?" "Those funds are certified." "So you are certifying this check as being valid?" "Oh, no sir, we can't do that." I hung up and called the the guy to tell him he got to wait a week for his check to clear and he should change banks.

Talking about banks...the company I work for had a office in Philippines, I TT wired funds from local bank here in HK to the bank in Philippines, and I can check both banks by online banking. Normally it takes 3 days, to wire fund to any bank, so today I check the receiving bank, I can see the funds in the summary, but when I click on the page for the monthly statement, the funds is not included, WTF!

Wells Fargo did it to me with a check that was the proceeds from a loan written at the branch where I tried to deposit the check, trying to deposit it into an account opened just for this check, in the names of the people whose name appeared on the check.

Worse yet, I had my mortgage there and it was a home equity loan check.

PNC/National City made so many mistakes I closed my account. When I tried to close the account at the drive-through, they told me I had to go inside. I told them I couldn't go inside because of their no firearms signs.

I do not like any entity that holds me to a higher standard than they allow me to hold them.

That is why you should bank with your local credit union. I pulled out of WF years ago. Never understood how they can hold funds for days even if you deposited cash in the bank in person. Total scam. Making money on my money before I can write a check with it.

Wachovia was always referred to as Walk-all-ova-ya by many of my friends/family and now that they are Wells Fargo, they go by Wells Fee-go !

I have Citi. Never had a problem. They seem to bend over backwards when it comes to customer service, and their online banking is fantastic.

some bank cashiers checks are not the same as a certified check. cashiers checks are no different than a money order in places.

Shouldn't you be building an Igloo.

We have cloned credit cards where the funds can be removed from your account at pretty much any time.

We have counterfeited cashier's checks that the bank that wrote them won't verify.

We have cashier's checks the issuing bank won't verify.

We have huge amounts of Federal Reserve Notes in circulation that the North Koreans most likely printed.

Gee, do we have any trustworthy negotiable instruments we can use to conduct commerce?

Oh yeah, six BILLION in 1934 Treasury Bills counterfeited as well.

I used top think gold, antibiotics and bullets were the only good mediums of exchange. I'm beginning to think only bullets!

What's the difference?
certified are logged and traced, they can be guaranteed and deposited/cleared within 24-48 hours.

A cashiers/money order is technically a personal check written on bank paper. they arent as closely traced/logged and can bounce, easily. plus they are notorious for being fraudulent.

This is what drove me away from Valley National bank (Formerly Bank One, now Chase). I got home late one Friday and deposited my Paycheck in the Ugly Teller. Now it was clearly marked a Pay Roll check, but was from out of state. It was the same style payroll check I had been depositing weekly for over a year. Tuesday I received a snail mail saying my deposit was to be delayed by 3 business days because of out of state processing. I went down to the branch with all my pay stubs since I started at that company, showing each was identical and never before had they put a hold on it. They wouldn't budge and would not refund overdraft fees incurred from 5 days of lack of funds. I immediately closed my account and went down the street to Desert Schools Credit Union and gave them my business. VNB lost a 15 year customer (parents opened saving account when I was a kid). All over holding funds on a check they should not have held. I used Desert Schools until I needed a nationwide bank while traveling.

I can cash a Western Union money order at Western Union, postal money orders at the post office and walmart money orders at walmart. Why can't a bank do the same thing?
