Random stalling

When driving home in my D1, it stalls right between the same two exits. This is happened about five times

initially the truck will feel like I’m taking my foot on and off the accelerator. Then it just dies and I roll off to the side of the road

it won’t initially start, but if I wait 3 to 5 minutes it fires right back up and I get home. I put a pressure gauge on the fuel rail and the last time I stalled there was about 38 psi.

this is obviously very difficult to diagnose since it comes right back to life after sitting for five minutes

I will say that I have a 1996 D1 that is before the advanced Evap system but my ECU is from a 1998

I would assume it’s my crankshaft position sensor except that I changed that out a year ago

Any thoughts?

Check the small harness going to the fuel pump. See if the wires are damaged and getting hot. It’s a replaceable section.

Also, maybe check your fuel pressure at like 2k & 3k rpms. In case it drops under load because the pump is getting tired or clogged fuel filter..

It probably has more to do with the temp the truck has gotten up to in 15 min. It takes 10 miles for everything to reach operating temp.
When it stalls next time have a spark checker and make sure that’s good. Then next would be a noid light on one of your injectors. Another thing to check is if the check engine light is on when you turn the key on with the engine off. If it’s not lit your ECM might not be powered up.
I know you say it has good fuel psi when it stalls. I usually tape my fuel pressure gauge to the windshield so I can watch it in real time.

How miles does it take before it dies
About 15 miles.

it’s also worth noting it’s a section of highway with a 7% grade
How old is the fuel pump? Could be fuel pump failing to hold pressure? You mentioned like on and off the gas pedal when it stops running, it cools off symptom of a fuel pump failing.

I guess I'd ask how much further is it to home? Is that the only time you drive the truck? If it were me I'd grab a plug and have the wife follow me and drive up and down the HW and see what happens. It would seem really strange it would die after the first 15 miles and not again.

This is exactly what happened to me when my fuel inertia switch was failing. On the highway it would buck a bit then stall then start right back up. Very intermittent.

Great looking Rangie! Better man than I getting that spare off the roof if needed.
Lol, Yea, that’s not an easy task, but it’s the best spot. The rack and spare stay at home unless I’m trailering it out west for rover rallys etc.

When we lived in Switzerland couldn’t easily get the Rangie in the garage with the rack on. Had a Harken pulley lift to store it after taking it off. Then used ramps to make sure to keep it level to get out after reinstalling it in the garage. When we built our house made sure the garage door / entrance wasn’t a problem.

PT. I’m exhausting all avenues 😁

anyway I finally put my obd2 in it and I’m getting a p0335 code. So now I’m going take another peak at at the crack position sensor

Check the wiring and insulation, maybe it’s getting hot. Also maybe the reluctor teeth if the sensor itself looks ok.
