I paid $1800 for a 4.6 once. It had just gotten a valve job and new head gaskets. It included the oil pan & valve cover gaskets.
If someone just yanked it from a donor truck I wouldn't pay more than $1500. If you put a little make up on it and throw in a couple new gaskets I might pay $1800 again.

How should one take your comment? It's hard to gloss over the fact that you told Marty, not once, but twice, that he was overcharging for the engine. It seems to me that good, used 4.6L engines, especially those that were originally in P38's, aren't falling from the trees, ripe for the picking.

I could have bought a running Range Rover Classic LWB for $500 once (in fact I bought several). Now the same truck might cost me $2500 or more.

Sold the motor for 1800 last night and the guy paid me 50 bucks to bring it to him. I am getting an 02 Range in today with lower miles. I might ask 2k for it.

I apologize for having an opinion. I did not mean to offend anyone or cause harm to anyone with my opinion.

Please forgive me for having an opinion. I seem to have forgotten that this was the internet and it is unacceptable to have an opinion that is different from anyone else.

I'm not really interested in getting into a debate. The issue here is simple. Someone wanted to know what a 4.6L from a Range Rover would cost. Now, Marty, a man who probably sells more 4.6L's in a year than most people own new cars in a lifetime, responded. He gave a price based on numerous previous sales, a knowledge of the going rate for parts that few have and the fact that he actually had the part in question on hand. In two posts, Keanan mentioned one transaction, years ago, where he stumbled onto a particularly good deal. Yes, it happens, sometimes, not ALL the time. It's like right now someone on eBay may be selling a part that would normally sell for significantly more. That seller may need the cash, maybe doing it as a one time thing, may be pissed off at the Land Rover he thought would be great but cost him tons of money in repairs. Whatever the reason, does one person, selling something significantly below what others are charging make that the new, defacto price?

"I paid $1800 for a 4.6 once." I'll say it again, I "once" paid $500 for a running Range Rover Classic LWB. Does that mean that's the new price for running LWB's? If fact, if someone were asking for the current rate for LWB's would my comment on "once" buying one for $500 have any bearing at all on the discussion other than boosting my post count?

Like I said, I'm not interested in a debate on the issue. You guys can continue amongst yourselves.

Actually I purchased the engine last January, only 8 months ago. The engine had 98k at the time. Like I said $1800 really isn't a bad deal. The location effects the price, I live in a huge population center. There are Land Rovers all over so prices for used parts are a bit lower here. If a guy lives in a smaller town and there aren't many Rovers around, prices will be a bit different.

I didn't want to start a debate, and I'm not trying to debate. My original comment was misinterpreted.
