Rear (Cargo) Door

My bought his D1 when he turned 16. It’s been a great truck with only the usual stuff for a typical 180k mile Rover that you drive on a daily basis and take to/from college 9 hours away and around town. We typically find ways to fix or work around things but this new issue may be a tough one.

He was having issues with opening the rear door, even after replacing the actuator but he found that manually using the key from outside and pulling the handle would allow him to open from outside. He was on Fall break and decided to look again at what was wrong with the latch. In the process the latch lodged in the locked position while the door was open so he couldn’t close it. Nothing he did would unlock the latch so he forced the latch to an open position with a pry bar so he could get back to school. Now it is permanently locked and nothing is working so we assume we’ll have to break in from the inside by somehow getting to and backing out the striker.

Has anyone had the pleasure of doing this? If so, did you learn any tricks or have other suggestions?

I can't help you with gaining access to the door, but it sounds like the cause of the initial problem is a broken lock spring. The main piece of evidence suggesting this is the fact that you could open the door by holding the plunger up with the key. The good news is that a replacement part is cheap on ebay, there is excellent documentation available to walk you through the repair, and the job is easy - although it requires attention to detail. The bad news is that you have other problems to resolve first. When you get to that point, send me a message - I can email you an illustrated walk-through guide.

Had this happen shortly after I got my Disco 1. You can access the door lock by climbing over the back seat and removing the subwoofer module. Once that's off you can remove the door card and gain access to the lock mechanism. Not an easy feat but doable nonetheless.

“Luckily” the back panels were off bc we were working on the actuator and trying figure out why it wasn’t working. Time to jump in there to figure things out.

If it's anything like the Disco 2 rear cargo latch, you can remove the Land Rover badge, spray a heaping amount of WD-40/PB Blaster into the door handle linkages and work it back and forth until something unlocks the cargo door.

To close the loop on this...we were able to unlatch from inside and get the rear door open. Removal of old latch was easy but we were careful not to undo anything unnecessary and take pics of everything before doing so. There were a few pieces we needed to pirate from the old latch that didn’t come with the new latch. The most tedious part of the whole job was attaching one internal clip. Just took time and a small magnetic screwdriver to hold in place bc the space is so tight you can’t get in there too easily. Door opens and closes like brand new with key and fob which it hasn’t done in 4 years so the kid feels like he’s got a new truck.

Now onto the 10’s of other little things that would be nice to have working again.
