Rear Wiper Gremblins

I've been trying to figure out why my rear wiper hasn't been working. I just chalked it up to the gremblins. So this morning it was cold enough to have ice on the windows, so I put on the rear defroster and decided to try the wiper after about 10 minutes and it worked! Besides it being electrical, what would cause it to only run with the rear defroster on?

There are two kind of gremlins:
1)a thermal switch that prevents burning the wiper motor in case of frosted arm. It resets alone 15 approx. minutes later.
2)the MFU (multifunction unit) that don't allow to run rear wiper if drivers door is open.
May be the 1st Gremlin is aplicable in this case.

Mine was intermittant and then stopped.
Traced it to a break in the loom under left front seat.
Opened loom between chassis and floor and found broken green wire.

Mine works somedays, and some days it dosent.

Between the fucked up mirror and the huge tire, I cant see enough to care.

On my 96', when I first got it, my rear wiper worked sometimes but not allways.
I ended up taking out the wiper motor, taking it apart and cleaning out the grease that had become rock hard. I regreased it, put back together and it now works perfectly.

Good luck!

I finally got around to trying to fix the wiper. It turns out that fuse # 12 was blown (I should have checked that first)! The wiper works more often than not, but I think the problem is the MFU. My wipers up front work and then they don?t, the seatbelt light is intermittent when I am belted in, and the headlight washers are inop. From what I was reading, all of this ties into the MFU. It could be just a coincidence that all of that stuff is wrong/broke at the same time suggesting the MFU is bad. We'll see.

I figured I give you guys an update. I read on a post here to check fuse 13 as well. Guss what, it was blown as well. I replaced it and everything is working.

Here is the funny thing. My differential lock sensor was shot, or so I thought, so I was going to tear the center consol apart next weekend. After I replaced the fuse, I was driving around and hit a dirt road and tried to shift into low. When I did, I about put the shifter through the front consol! It shifted perfectly. The only thing that I don't have working is the neutral alarm. I figure that is just another fuse, which is easy compared to tearing the consol apart. So my advice to you is before you tear the consol apart to replace the sensor, check fuse 13!
