Rear work lights, and brighter interior trunk lights

Hi all, i'm looking to install some brighter interior trunk lights, and rear work lights. I can barely see anything inside or outside of the truck when I'm loading/unloading at night. It would be great to find a solution to minimize the amount of wire that is exposed as I'd like it to look somewhat stock, but be as bright as hell. Oh, and I don't need multi-colored LEDs :)

Curious about what you all have done.

I currently do not have a rack.

Thx!

Camel discos had an extra light in the back. Series 2 discos were that way from the factory

Its the same as the front light. Wiring is tied into the light above the rear seat. Pretty easy to do.

I wired one of these into the cargo area ceiling. It’s connected to the boot light in the lower right corner so it activates just like any other dome light.

If you look, you may even find it in almond to almost the D1 interior. Just search for dome light (RV, etc) on Amazon and they’ll pop up.

As for the rear work light, that was my first “improvement.” It was a little caveman-ish, but it’s worked for 8 years. I made a bracket to mount above the rear washer jet. At the time, the jet wasn’t working, so I drilled a bigger through the jet for my wire and connected it to the trailer wiring harness fog lights. Wire it into the fog light button on the dash, and you’re on.

There’s a writeup somewhere for using the trailer harness, and if you wire it so it’s always hot, you can have light in the back. I have it set to work with my rear fogs and a kill switch inside the back door so I can have the fogs on and no work light for traveling. This setup is also nice if you want red light outside at night and don’t need the bright work light.

I can post a picture of the lamp setup tomorrow, but I’m sure it’s been done before. Nothing new here for a 25 year old truck!

You can connect it to the original wiring that is located on the right side rear panel by the rear door.

if you tap into the overhead back seat lamp rather than the side panel lamp you can pull all 3 wires so it goes on when the doors open or when the over ride switch is used

What about buying one or two used dome light assembly and using those? Or would you recommend

those are the front dome light so yeah that would work. As far as installing 2, the multifunction unit uses a p52n06 transistor to control the dimming which is safely overspec’d where 2 additional lights with factory wattage bulbs would be safe.

Here’s my set-up:
1. Work light wired through trailer harness and fog light switch. Hit the dash switch and both fogs and work light turn on. The switch you see by the outlet kills the work light but not the fogs. It’s wired hot full time.

This was my first mod. If I only knew then what I know now.

2. Outlet is wired hot full time as well.

3. Cabin light is an Amazon special. It’s wired through the boot light so it activates with any door opening. It’s not wired 3-way like the driver’s map light.
