Removing Center Console - can't get the shift lever off!

Anyone know the secret to removing the auto tranny shift lever on a Disco 1? I got the top plastic piece off and the little clips out - but there doesn't seem to be a nut to unscrew to remove the T knob - it looks like it needs a special tool or something. I don't want to force it or mess it up. My Rave doesn't even address the auto shifter - only the manual one.

How does this come off?

I recall doing this on a D2 and it simply required some force. Hold on and give it an even pull, dont try to twist it off

Make sure your face is about 10 inches directly above the shift knob then pull it straight up as hard as possible until it flies up and hits you in the nose. This is the only way to do it.

Hmmm - really? Just pull up hard? OK - I will give that a try!

OK - that's not working. This is a D1 not 2 so might be different. Rovercanus - have you done this on a D1?

Sorry guys - a strong light on the subject has a revealed a large nut after all - I was looking inside of the nut instead of the nut itself! Doh!

Here's what's under the plastic cover:



Remove the clips and the side button comes out - and then you see this:



As you can tell - there doesn't appear to be a nut holding this together.



You still can't hardly see it here - but there is a large nut that has to be removed. It's almost the size of the opening. Once off, you can just pull straight up.

Hard to see those 15mm nuts sometimes.

It's a 19mm, much bigger nut than a 15mm nut. Just had to do this one...

I hit a guy in the face like that with a LR3 shifter. Looked like it hurt like hell. Not sure why he had his face in there anyway.

I work for a fire department. When I was a newer firefighter I had a Captain that literally looked right over my shoulder and was always right in my ear with every little thing I did. One bloody nose took care of that... oops!
