My RTE bumper and sliders are beginning to show quite a few rusty spots and I would like to refinish the them. For my wheels and my Greg Davis rear bumer, I just lightly sand any rusty areas, clean, and spray with Rust-Oleum Satin Black spray paint. They look great and last a little over a year.

Can I do the same for my RTE sliders and front bumper? Is there anything bad about painting over powder coating? I also plan on painting the plastic fender flares as they show a lot of sun damage? Is that ok too?

Thanks,
Jamil

I am not too sure about the bumper, but I painted some plastic on mine not too long ago. I just used a spray on primer(for plastic) to help the paint stick and then painted away. I am not too sure how long it will last but as of now it is looking great.....

I just did some touch up work on my RTE bumper. There was a small rust spot so i started to sand it and more and more powder coat kept flaking off. Finally when it stopped comming off there was about a one foot section of light rust that i didnt even know was there before. So i just sanded the whole area down, got rid of the rust put on a couple coats of spray paint primer and then a couple coats of flat black rustolium spray paint. It looks pretty good, i didnt know what else to do with it, but i think i am going to have the whole thing sand blasted and re-powder coated in the future.

Missed you in VT last weekend Jamil. The Rovertym sliders I picked up used from a guy on NH were terrribly rusted, once you started peeling the powedercoat off it came off in big flakes and it was obvious the rust crawls under the coating. I had mine sandblasted by a guy who paints bridges and military armored vehicles among other things. He repainted them by first applying a heavy duty industrial primer (not thin automotive primer) and then some left over superexpensive paint from another project. All for 200 bucks. Here is the finished product.

Yeah i was also thinking about just painting it. After i just spray painted a large section of it i thought it looked pretty good and i couldnt tell the difference between the paint and powdercoat stading 2 feet away from it. Paint seems much cheaper and easier to maintain as well.

My sliders had the rustoleum hammered paint on them and they looked great as well as held up great. What do you guys think about spraying the bumpers in Line-X or Rhino lining? Since its suppose to outlast the life of your truck like they say why wouldnt on your bumpers and sliders. As well protect from rust. Just curious if it would work that great and if anybody has had that done here......

I think that line-x on bumper should hold up great. I'm not so sure about rhino lining, only because it goes on a bit thicker than line-x, and may cause a fit problem. I have line-x in the bed of my tow rig and I love it.

Might hold up OK, but would you really like the look of bed liner on the exterior of your vehicle?

Thanks for all the great responses. I think I will just sand down the rusty areas and paint. I'll have to really tape off the area as I don't want take them off the truck, but it seems the easiest option.

Does anyone know a paint that will hold up better than Rust-oleum? This paint is pretty good, IMO, as it lasted for over a year on my rear bumper and on my wheels where the paint doesn't stick that well.

Hell yea man Id love the look of that. In my opinion it would make it look tougher and probably be tougher as well as it is different. Not to mention Id say that not to many people have that sprayed on their bumpers.....

I had my front bumper and rock sliders stripped, both were rusty. I then zinc plated them with a yellow chromate and sprayed it all with PPG Epoxy Primer. It can be used as a top coat and I did just that. I really like the finish and it is really close to stock. It has held up really well, even with the massive amount of salt they use around here in the winter.
