00 DII, 216K. Ive got a tiny leak in the front cover gasket and am thinking to replace the timing chain while in there. Its been awhile since Ive done one, and remember thinking last time I replaced the gears with the chain, I had thought 'whats the use?' given no apparent wear/damage to the orginal cam/crank gears.

additionally, who's selling the best, recommeded chain?

thanks for your input, mv

As Mike Ehrmantraut said in Breaking Bad, "I chose a half measure, when I should have gone all the way. I’ll never make that mistake again.”
In other words, "Go deep"

Additionally - Cloyes gear and chain kit. No half measures.

Does cloyes make 4.0/4.6 stuff?

3.5-4.2 is a no brainer, but the non genuine 4.0/4.6 is garbage

Definitely plan to replace the oil pump too. Or at least inspect it before reassembling. There are many reports of cracked oil pump gears in DIIs. It's a well-known occurrence with DIIs.

At 216k any flat tappet cam is pretty tired. But then again pulling out lifters isn't exactly a while you're in there job.

Unfortunately, they do not. Aftermarket 4.0/4.6 cam gears are cast crap. Genuine parts aren't what they used to be either. Carefully inspect parts that arrive. If they're not up to par, consider reusing original if not too worn.

Not promising. Genuine box, cast gear. Originals were fully machined.

appreciate the replies all, other than two head gaskets jobs (38k warranty, 185k just because I wanted to stop oil leaks), the motor is original. I'm running Shell Rotella T and Balwin filters every 3k. When I did the head gaskets at 185K, cam/lifters looked great, no tell tale signs of imperfect wear.
