Rolled my d2, need to chop roof and doors.

Hello to all, I have unfortunately joined the roll over club and slammed the roof right into a tree at 35 mph one night coming home from shop. I guess I had one too many beers. Thankfully we tipped it over on its wheels again a few hours later, I reset inertia switch, found shift handle in woods (along with other stuff), and got it to crank and drive home since I was only a few hundred yards away. Hazard lights are stuck on and shift interlock isn’t releasing but that’s all I noticed so far. Truck has been daily driven since 09 and I’ve done all repairs and maintenance myself at our auto shop. Has ace which I love.

Since it runs and drives ok but has a totally destroyed body, I felt I have three options with the truck and would like advice. I could sawzall the roof and sides off and add tube for roll and side protection, make a lexan windshield, etc. use it to push and pull vehicles at the shop or go off road.
2 replace body only with another good clean example, knowing my chassis and driveline work great without codes.
3 scrap it out/part it out and buy another replacement and use any needed parts.

Even if I replace it (option 3) I’d really like to keep it useable for shop purposes but worry about electronic problems with water getting Inside. I have it in the garage now to stay dry but need my space back. I have too many land rovers as it is but this was THE daily driver and first one I owned.

Thanks
Jacob Morse

Damn man, you're lucky to be alive!!
I can't tell you what to do. Comes down to how much time you have and if you want to make that investment to salvage that truck.

Yeah, the answer definitely depends on how much time you have. A soft-top conversion is no weekend project to do it well. Would be fun, and possibly useful for you, but do you have the time?

Dude.....Put a tarp over it for now with a few bungy cords to keep it dry. It the sunroofs didn't leak before they will now,

Definitely chop top material.....but honestly is it worth it..... Naaah.

Option 4: By another D2 of similar vintage/drivetrain and use this as a spares truck.

Is there any shops who have done soft top conversions? I’ve seen them on D1’s and D2’s, some looking better than others, but assumed they were all one off jobs

Pitch the body. Like PM said, there are plenty of perfectly good D2s out there with bad motors.

How the heck are you and your passenger still alive? You are very lucky you weren't crushed beyond recognition. No injuries? Just wow!
Go with option 3.

Can confirm; however, the work I’ve seen by him has been on a perfectly good non-rolled DII...

And this thing wasn’t rolled, it was basically wrapped around a tree. The only thing I could think of would be adapt it to the pikes peak rover tube buggy. Otherwise there is nothing you can do to that thing to make any type of modification worthwhile except maybe as your option 3. This one is gone because you drank and drove. Consider it a lesson learned, pull your motor, and pour one out on the ground for it instead every time you are thinking of drinking and driving?

Yea wrapped a tree with roof is really it. Blew out all windows, a and b pillars, and no doors work period. I got a tire off on a low shoulder and knew it was going over and when I got up on two wheels I just laid over on the console and passenger seat area and my left side and head hit the roof/“tree” square in line. I was knocked out for 30 mins or so then when I came to I pulled myself out of cockpit area and between front seats I to the back seat area and stood up on the driver rear door panel and called my wife to come help me see how to get out. Thankfully I was driving alone at midnight in my neighborhood and had no one else involved, could have been decimating. I’m getting better every day and just miss the truck. I would love to just get it useable as a chop up and tube up a roll protection cage but not worry about looks or bodywork period. Mainly worried about door latches and alarm systems, ace accelerometers and other roof sensors. Doors have to get cut off to get inside it easy enough. Won’t be replacing them not worth it. I think I’ll go with option 3 but until then I need to chop it so it gets to my main shop and can be mobile easy enough. Hard to climb in it as it is. I’m thankful for my life and won’t be drinking anymore for a good while, never drive after drinking even when your only going 1/4 mile home in a neighborhood! Lesson learned!
