seems about right for a D1.

edit: actually, i will need to take a look at my '96. your torque converter may not be kicking in.

While maintaining 50 mph, take your left foot and lightly touch the brake at the same time. You should see the rpm's drop and feel the torque converter lock up as you touch the brake. You'll be pressing both pedals at the same time. It's just one way to check to lock up.

I think that seems about right. I usually like that last shift to accure at about 52 mph on light accell. That last shift is the torque converter locking up the last time. To get engine braking in all ranges it shifts 1/2 shift then torque converter lock up. 2/3 then converter lock up repeat.

Not sure if that answers your question but it relates to engine rpm at speed.

97 Disco 1 automatic trans standard tires P235-70R16. What RPM do you see at 55? Mine is over 2000 and seems high.
Just a thought, but has the alternator been replaced? I replaced the one on my 98 with a alt from a 95 I had laying around. It was a larger pulley. It completely changed the rpms as read on the guage
