RRC Trans Temp Sensor - Is it Essential?

I have fabbed braided AN lines for external oil (8AN) and trans coolers (6AN) for my 92 RRC, but cannot find a AN fitting with a M10x1.5mm port for the factory trans temp switch.

Does this switch enable overdrive on the HP22 like in the later D2s etc? Or is it just for the warning light?

If it is just the light, I may install a temp gauge and save a lot of headache. I tapped an elbow for 10x1.5, but when I thread the switch in it practically blocks the elbow's entire inner diameter. It is also a potential leak point. If the sensor is essential, I will have to find another fitting to tap that places the port farther out from the ID.

I was able to find a thick 6AN Y-block to tap for the transmission temperature switch. This way the switch sits off to the side and does not obstruct flow like in an elbow. If it leaks I'll go with a gauge and see if OD still works.

To follow-up here, so far so good. The trans was taking a while to shift when I first got everything back together. I just had to adjust the kick-down cable. The trans shifts great now and the only leak I am chasing is the tiniest one at an AN elbow on the bottom of the transmission.

The new headers and DUI ignition system really woke the RPI 4.6 up. I get a loud sucking whistle from the snorkle now, but it's super responsive so I'll take the tradeoff. RPI quoted 300hp for this engine over a decade ago and it feels every bit of that. I haven't got it over 2500rpm since I put it back together but it gets up to speed so quick it's like the 35s aren't there.

Very nice. Also have a RPI 4.6 in my Rangie. What DUI system did you install?

I installed a Davis Unified Ignition HEI style distributor #96920RD and Live Wires plug wires #C9074-350RD. The wiring was very simple, but I had to grind the alternator bracket/engine hook. I also had to space the alternator tensioner rod/slider out away from the engine to clear the distributor with longer bolts and some washers. I gapped the spark plugs to around .05".

To be honest, it was kind of pain to install. The results are worth it though. If I let the fuel pump prime the truck fires nearly immediately, quicker than some new cars.

The stainless headers are nice, but I had to grind one flange a little for the alternator bracket and ratchet strap a tube on each side to get the bolts to line up exactly. For the money, Rimmer Bros could do more quality control.

Thanks for info. Sounds like a worthwhile upgrade. My 4.6 is a Stage II and with just slightly larger 235/85-16 tires runs pretty well. Especially after ECR rebuilt it before taking the Rangie to Switzerland. Great info though for the Rangie files!
