I am in process of installing a Safari Gard (original / used) rear bumper on my D1. I was of the impression no cutting was required. Well, I now know the rear frame “horns“ on NAS trucks need to be trimmed. Also, it definitely seems the rear quarters need a trim? Anyone have experience with this?

I trimmed the horns, no problem. You have to cut them completely off. I had to do that with another brand of HD bumper on another one of my D1s.

That is a good idea but there is also interference at the bottom of the rear quarter panel. The SG bumper attaches to the body where the factory ”splash” panels mount. It is the panel that the factory mud flap is attached. The SG bumper replaces those parts, it has a built in panel for that. The lower part of the quarter panel prevents it from going high enough to reach those splash panel mounting holes. Moving it rearward enough to help would put it too far back to make those mounting points not work. I don’t think there is a way around some trimming of the lower quarter panel.

I have kind of wedged it on and damaged the lower part of the quarter panel. So, it’s not the end of the world that I have to cut off that area, now.

I searched online for SG install instructions and came up empty.

Unfortunately no it didn’t. The new one fit pretty well but it took some work to get it right. I had it on and off a couple times. I shared the issues I had ( mostly in skid plate brackets) with the new owner of SG since were friends but all in all a nice bumper with a few minor mods (welded nuts to the backside of the brackets and some light trimming to make it fit better). It looks great and I’m happy with it for sure. I think I bought the first D1 rear bumper he made and he was very interested in correcting the brackets. I sent him photos as well. I assume that has been corrected now. If not it wasn’t a huge deal. Fit was pretty damn good
