Hoping someone living in VA might be able to chime in here. Have researched the VA DMV website and have come out with the requisite migrane.
I have a vehicle here in CO with a salvage title in my name. I need to ship it to my son in VA, but can find little on TRANSFERRING a salvage title. Plenty on getting a VA salvage title for cars already there, but little else.
Anyone have any first-hand experience/knowledge?
- Thanks

Yes, its a pain in the ass, so much so we ditched the effort all together after weeks of hassle and run around with the DMV. We had a savaged titled truck from out of state we were trying to title here in Va., got so much run around about having to send shit to the capitol, pay hundreds in fees, and no eta on how long until the process would complete. We ended up selling the truck for parts.

If you can, get the Salvage cleared off the title in your home state and then send the truck and the new clear title before it gets here. If not, get yourself a 55gal drum of aspirin, you'll need it.

Yep, they want a pile of money to do it, and it's a lengthy process. Conversely, when a tree totaled my DII here in VA..insurance totaled it, I bought it back and the title wasn't marked as salvage.

He has to send the title direct to the State offices. It is no longer handled at the regular DMV sites.

They will then send him a title in the mail or info on how to pick up at a local center.

Register the truck in Kentucky with a regular title, re-register in Virgina with a clear title. Seems to be a scam pot lots use to clear up title problems.

That's what Richmond told us and wanted quite a bit of $$ to do it, maybe it's changed in a year.

Small correction. Just looked at the title and it says "rebuilt from salvage". Don't know if that makes any difference as far as VA is concerned. Am going to attempt to talk to a real person at the DMV this morning.

I talked to my neighbor who's a car dealer. He thinks that if you have a salvage certificate (not a title), you must apply for a rebuilt from salvage title. Without a title you cannot tag/operate the vehicle on the highway. In order to get a rebuilt from salvage title when all you have is a salvage certificate you must contact the Virginia State Police for an inspection and they'll tell you what documents you need from there, if any.

But if you already have a rebuilt from salvage title, it should be easy to transfer I would think.

You nailed it. Actually talked with a live person this morning. Because I already have the CO "Rebuilt From Salvage" title, all he has to do is send in the CO title, one form and 10.00 and he should get the VA title in about 30 days.

That might, I dont recall "rebuilt from salvage" being on our title, just "salvaged". Maybe you'll luck out with that wording if it even makes a difference.

Wow, I have a pile of trucks with "Salvage" proudly emblazoned on the title and haven't had a problem transferring them-one is even from Kentucky.

And, the reason the totaled vehicle doesn't have a salvage title is that the title never left your hands.

In some rare situations, it is the duty of the vehicle owner to obtain the salvage title. Flood Dawgs in Indiana, the OWNER of the vehicle is REQUIRED to have the title reissued as a salvage if the water went over the rocker panels and the vehicle is fewer than seven years old.

If you have a salvage TITLE you're just fine. I've done it. If it is a CERTIFICATE - you have some paperwork.
