I have a Safety Devices roof rack for a disco II. It is the high profile rack and includes 4 genuine Land Rover lights. The lights work, but I have not used them in about a year and a half. The rack itself needs cosmetic work. As of right now, it is still fully functioning, but in need of someone who has better metal handling skills than me. I have included pictures below of the rack.

I am interested but have two issues:
1. I don't need the lights and don't want them.
2. I am new to this and don't know what I am getting into. Have you had anyone look at the rack and estimate the cost of repair and repainting? I am in Houston and would be willing to take the photos to someone but don't know who to go to.

Anyway, I really want an SD rack for my 2003 Disco II but don't want to make a big mistake.

Thanks for your response.

BTW, if it works out, I would pay for shipping. I think a freight company would probably be pretty reasonable. Are you willing to either help crate it or take it to someone who will?

I've got no interest in the rack, but for the sake of discussion (based on previous experience when one party to my Disco-not me-rammed it into a parking garage at an abusrdly early hour in the morning, on the way to work...) :)

Metal work wise what I used was a rubber mallet and a lot of angst...and our rack was way more messed up than that!

As far as working on that corner thats bent up and straightening it out, shouldnt be that hard. I just repainted mine, had some rust spots just like the ones in the pic, it is really easy. What i did was use a hand sander (electric, works a bit faster) with 80 grit sandpaper on it. I sanded down the rust spots, old paint peels off ones the sander touches it. Then i put some Rustoleum heavy rust primer, after i cleaned up the rack after sanding of course. And for the final touch i painted it with some flat black enamel that i got from Lowes. It turned out really good and you can always touch it up real easy.

A friend of mine recently had his bent up rack on his 110 repaired for just under $500. It had similar damage (only one rear corner bent) from the previous owner trying to fit it into a garage. They ended up cutting out the section to repair it correctly. Don't kid yourselves. If you can't do the work yourself and want it done right its going to cost you $. If you can than its only your time. $700 is steep for a rack in that condition IMHO though.

Some things are better left unspoken. But SpeedAgent, you are so smart to buy a knock off instead. Too bad they cost a grand... but wait, they come cheaper used, don't they? Sorry smarty pants. You can't compare the welds and strength of a SD rack compared to a Northwest Parts rack. The repairs for me, a measly college student, would run about $250 at a shop. Making the juice worth the squeeze. Additionally, $600 takes the rack. Buy it or not, I could give a shit. Just don't tell me about your smart ass plans to rule the world with a cheap piece of equipment. Please just let me sell my shit without anybody making a smart ass remark. It's courtesy people. Grow up.
