Hi, I am new to this forum, My 1998 discovery has terrible brake squeak when close to complete stop. I have just replaced front and rear pads with factory replacements and turned all 4 rotors. Dealer states that this is normal. I have too many cars to mention in the past with no issue like this. Very loud noise, squeak. Does anyone have any useful advice. I will take L/R pads off and replace with aftermarket if it will solve problem. I can't be the first to ask this question.

John,
Are you sure they were factory pads, did they have sound deadening material on the back of the pads, a sound plate or did you spray them with anything? How thick were the rotors after cutting, and yes you are not supposed to turn the Rover rotors due to the soft alloy.
Were the pads you installed beveled on the brake material edges?

You can't turn LR rotors, so if they charged for that you need to talk to them. If you are very light footed on brake pads, they will squeak....hammer them a few times to make them happy again.....(but check your rear view mirror first)

Aftermarket pads will squeal MUCH worse, wear MUCH longer, eat up rotors MUCH faster, and give MUCH less stopping force. Sounds like your dealer didn't do you any favors - they should have treated the pad surfaces with anti-squeal compound, and the backs with anti-sieze compound.

And they should NOT have turned the rotors!

john, i'm having the same problems too. can you tell me if this is a new issue or something you've had ever since you bought the truck? Also, how low were your rotors and pads when you had changed them?

I've had a 95 D1 from day one and had no issues with squealing (8 yrs) until i changed my rear rotors and pads all round (DBA rear rotors and OEM pads). Then the squealing started happening.

Someone had told me that the squealing could be due to the calipers needing rebuild. Is that possible?

My 98 D1 does the same, but only since i replaced the pads with non OEM ( I used Napa).
Thought at first it was because something got trapped between pad and rotor, so took all the pads out, examined them and found a small ( as in tiny) stone embedded in one pad. Removed it and gently ran wetordry paper pver pad and disk. Re loaded the back of the pads with anti-sqeak, and put them back. Now, 1000 miles later, they sqeak like crazy again. took them back out and carelfully chamfered the edges to match the old ones I removed, put them back and no longer sqeak. Next time i'll buy the Lockeed oem pads!

Try EBC rotors and pads. Solved my squeals permanently and gave me a shorter stopping distance.

Here is a Quick 2 Cents

Hey,

If it is worth anything to ya I have the exact same problem. If this sound really drives you crazy it is probably because you are in traffic a lot. Slamming on the brakes does some good but to completely alleviate the sound you have basically 2 options.

1.) Go to the website www.expeditionexchange.com and order some of their nice AUSI Ported roters... The sound is most likely occuring because of the typical vibration caused by the pad rubbing the rotor during traffic conditions (at slow speeds). Disco 98's are famous for this!

2.) There is a website called Motorcars LTD. They have something called a brake damper for the rear breaks (which are the most problematic). You can order some of these with a new brake pad set and put them on.

The option is yours... I think they will both be about as much in the end so I would opt for the ported roters because they are bad A*# basically. And if you do any real off roading you will love them. These two solutions are your only choices. Happy Rovering to ya!

Are you referring to these?

Neil, I use napa for almost everything i can, I get great $ and service, Threw on a fr+rear set of pads, and over the next 10k miles delt with the squeeks, Annoyed and thinking that my braking was not as good as it used to be, I inspected the pads again, Found that there was very little wear on the pads, and alot of wear on the rotors!
Replaced the pads with lockheed/delphi pads, Replaced the rotors with same, and threw the pads far/far away
Pads are easier to change than the rotors!!!!
