LR disco 2 2004, new installed balanced tires. both drive shafts have no play when i crawl under and grab them, seems like no play? i have read the front driive shaft had a recal, but yes they wear out etc. the u joints look ok, the front one and shaft have grease nipples. i get this vibration side to side, even the spedometer needle vibrates :( I know it is all wheel drive but can i completely remove the front driveshaft to test if its the problem? can it drive with out a front drive shaft, are the flanges gonna fly off?

Thanks

Dave

You can remove the front shaft and lock the center diff to rule out the front shaft if you'd like.

Also, nearly every highway vibration I've ever had was due to unbalanced tires. A few months ago I had some good shakes going and I replaced my tired old 100K mile shocks and steering stabilizer and then had my tires balanced again. Cured everything.

When you say, "this vibration is from side to side...do you mean you feel it in your steering wheel, like a wobble?

Normally, you'll feel a bad drive shaft or poorly balanced tires in the seat of your pants.

If you are feeling most/all of the vibration or wobble in the steering wheel...I'd concentrate on the steering components, like tie-rods, ball-joints, shocks and alignment.

If it seems more like the drive train (seat of your pants), I'd recheck that front drive shaft or remove (locking CDL, for test drive).

I am surprised you had so few highway vibrations :)

On my new 95 LWB, a clear case of shimmy stemmed from badly fucked up old BFG AT (not KO!) tires, a very loose upper steering shaft joint (on the steering wheel shaft), and... likely, sloppy swivel bearings and dead stabilizer. That thing would shimmy for no reason on a straight line.

In a sharp contrast... vibration that is felt on the steering wheel can only be caused by the front driveshaft if it is like ten minutes before leaving the premises. Keep in mind that it is about 3.54 times the frequency of wheel rotation.

Just replced my u joints and she is smooth as silk now but have gad bushings and les Schwab china tires shake her to her core. Pick somthing and fix or maintain it, bushings and ujoints dont last forever.

i put it on ramps, crawled under, had my wife turn the wheels side to side, i can't find any play, all seems pretty solid/firm. hmm maybe a tire then. They are new tires, maybe the weights fell of or something? i'm gonna take it to a local shop and see what they find. but i will take it back to the tire shop first to see if it the tire balancing. Will let ya know what it is when i find out. Thanks for the input.

I've had tires "balanced" and almost immediately had to have them rebalanced. I make it a point to hang around and make cool with the underpaid laborers working hard but maybe not so diligently at my local Discount Tires.
