Hello. Engine completely rebuilt and runs well except when on the road. She is shaking like she's missing, but she isn't missing. I think that it's her clutch. Suspect that I may have nickered the clutch somehow and my knowledge surrounding clutches is at best shaky as well. Anyone familiar how to adjust? And yes, I did pull the block on our 95 manual discovery. Thanks.

Does this happen while sitting still and revving the engine to the same rpm's as when said shaking occurs? This shaking does it change if you're accelerating and then coast? Does it change while coasting with the clutch engaged?

Nice Twain quote. Parked no shakes at any rpm. Yep, shaking does appear if accelerating and then gone while coasting out of gear. Will check if shaking occurs with clutch in.

Rover owner for 4 decades, so I've rebuilt a few and never seen one like this.......... Idunno :banghead:.

Does the vibration seem to be in the front or rear of the vehicle? Also do you know the condition of the drive shaft/prop shafts and u joints? How are the tires and roto flex joint?

The shakes happens only when accelerating in gear. Drive lines, joints, tires are all good. Checked the engine mounts and they are sound. My thought is that some how it could be clutch related. I could replace the slave cylinder and see what happens. Guessing is a bitch.

In summary, D1 is lunging in all gears almost like it is missing but it's not....Passing smog proves this. All running gear has been inspected and is in working condition. Motor mounts are intact.

Is anyone knowledgeable regarding a slave or master cylinder going bad? Thanks.

Sure sounds like a misfire under load. Throwing codes? How's your fuel pressure?
Apparently, if you need a new one, fuel pumps are VIN specific, so don't get a cheap generic D1 pump......if it turns out you actually need one.
I assume your filter is newish.

It passed smog. Miss, pump & fuel filter factor into passing smog. No codes at all.

What happens if you raise the RPMs and pop the clutch? Does it grab immediately? Shudder? Yeah I know it?s a Disco so it won?t smoke the tires...but it might give a clue about a clutch problem.

It grabs immediately. Almost sounds and feels like something hasn't been bolted down on the front passenger side. Engine mounts and sway bar have been correctly bolted down. Drive lines look good. Thanks.

Lunging? Could this be surging? Caused by fuel volume or pressure drops under load/demand?

I had to physically CUT OUT my fuel filter (1995 pre-evap NAS D1, manual trans) because it was basically welded to the fuel nuts. So I removed the entire line and ran teflon/stainless from just upstream of the filter...all the way to the engine compartment, where I mounted a *large* screw on filter (looks like an oil filter but does not have a bypass). By the way.. that thing had to be insulated because the underhood temps are off the chart here (NC/USA) in the summer. While this fixed my surging problem it exposed the next weakest link: the fuel regulator began to fail shortly afterward.. so that was replaced next.

One other "surging" problem I had occurred *after* replacing the fuel pump: the pressure line *blew out* due to it not being an actual high pressure hose; I am referring to the in-tank host that connects the actual pump motor to the plastic/metal egress fitting. Cheap crappy hose that came with a "high quality" pump. Live and learn.

By the way, if anyone has a cross reference to other pump motors, can you please drop it in here? The stock non-evap (1995 NAS...and I think 1994 and earlier non-NAS V8's) is the ESR3926. I am looking for alternatives (ford/GM/Toyota/etc) in case of "not in stock" situations.

Update:

1. One thing to check is the pressure hose connecting the pump motor to the egress/out ("to the engine") nipple . The stock oem metal nipple does not have barbs.. I have had replacement hoses pop off due to the pressure when the pump starts running.
2. I have also seen low pressure hoses being used for that pump connector hose..that have physically blown out.. typically the cheap Chinese crap included with low quality replacement pumps.

I highly recommend using Walbro / TI Fuel pumps. Summit racing sells them... lots of fake ones on Amazon.
