Slipping liner - how long?

I thought a slipped liner would cause the motor to drink coolant? The first motor in my '00 DII supposedly had a slipped liner, according to the dealer. The coolant loss was bad enough I had to top it off every 100 miles to keep from overheating...

In my opinion once the liner has slipped, the engine is done. This is my opinion, the liner slipped because the cylinder wall cracked, and it's letting coolant in between the sleeve and the cylinder wall. If this is the case, top hatting will not allow the coolant to make it's way to the top of the engine, instead it will go down to the crank/oilpan area. Just my opinion.

My engine had as bad of a liner rattle as any 4.6 ever had, but never used a drop of water. I didn't have enulsified oil, and my pistons weren't steam cleaned.
Many others have had similar findings too.

Let me tell you, the noise is fucking annoying. I can't tell you how much I hate it. I am building a replacement as we speak. I am pinning the liners and will hope for the best.

You are pinning the liners in your current engine to correct the problem or you have a different engine that you are pinning the liners in order to keep it from happening on the new engine?

Yah, someone post a soundbyte of their engine rattling away so that we may all share and enjoy!

I took mine apart this morning to install a "good" used block, should have recorded it!

Really? You had a slipped liner in yours?

I never noticed a knocking when one of my liners slipped. I did get the rough ride and then the SES light. My other truck just had the HGs done and I was told the liners look good in it.

im helping in this build up and the engine we are building had a knock but not as loud as his current engine makes.......pistons and cam went in this weekend so we are almost there.........ill see if i can get a video of his current noise sometime this week though

Is a slipped liner something that can be driven with as long as you don't mind the noise or is there a point where it renders the engine inoperable? Is the knocking really loud or is it just more of an annoyance?

How do you identify a slipped liner? My wife's 98 4.0 gets a metallic knocking noise coming somewhere unspecific within the engine from time to time, you can only really hear it when parked next to a bus or wall with your window open. It comes and goes. Is this a slipped liner?

very well could be but from what ive seen GEMS motors were pretty good with that....may be a bad rocker arm or lifter in your case

Thanks but I don't think that is the case. I know the rocker sound, been through that before, this is much more metallic banging, and as I say sporadic.

My well maintained 98 D1 4.0 with 108K went just over a week with a slight tick before the liner slipped far enough to grenade the engine. What came out of the oil pan can be seen here: http://bahnstorm.com/rover/engine.htm

I put part of the blame for it not lasting very long on it happening on a really cold sub zero morning shortly after startup, but once the problem starts I think, overall, it is a crap shoot on how long it will last if it is a slipped liner. So if you don't mind replacing the whole engine might as well run it till it breaks.

Reviving a decade old thread. neat. Everything surrounding this particular engine's demise and the subsequent tear down showed a sleeve failure as the cause of death, but whatever. 🤷‍♂️

Bought a 03 from a customer knocking and had blown head gasket, and no oil pressure from cracked pump, rebuilt motor with new bearings cam lifters reworked heads front cover etc and within 10 mins during break in it began erratic knocking at idle. I think the liner noise is most prevalent at idle and is not perfectly rhythmic, as it’s not always moving the same amount with every piston stroke. At some point the piston speed is high enough the liner can no longer move at that speed and it shuts up entirely until again it settles down at idle for a few. The engine has been run for 15k miles and 8 years with lots of off road low range use and it bothered me for a while so I dropped the pan and “pinned” all the liners with a 90 degree drill, tap set, hardware etc. cranked it up and let it run for an hour and it was silent, cam sounded awesome, I was a happy camper. 3k miles later the noise returned on one cylinder, only when hot. I saw that some oil was making its way out around the one “pin” on side of block, that’s the loose one. Haven’t bothered fixing it again but will likely enlarge the hole and tap for larger hardware or plug weld it next time I feel compelled. I added a inline thermostat housing with 180 degree stat and it helped drop temps a bit and reduces the noise as well. It still has not caused any other damage to engine but eventually it will pound the head gasket until it leaks again.

It's a really strange noise for sure. The only way to be sure that's what's making the noise is to tear the head off and look for witness marks on the compression ring of the head gasket.
Engine noises can't really be diagnosed over the inter web. Sound bites don't help.
