Something broke

I changed my oil a few days a go and now there is a knock out of the front timing cover when engine is hot. Do cracked oil pump gears knock? I wonder if running the pump dry for a few seconds after the oil change caused the gears to crack? Could it be something like a bad crank pulley? The truck is on 02 by the way.

a quick test pull the dipstick and drip the oil onto a black piece of cardboard go into the sun and with a magnifying glass look for metallic particles, if you see any then I would remove the serp belt and run the truck to see if the noise is still there.
If so then the oil pan and front cover should be removed to inspect the oil pump if your hearing a knock from the front of the engine

Interesting thread... my 2000 has had a knock for quite some time, to me it sounds like a rod bearing and I swear I've seen bronze chips in my last few oil changes(yikes!) but in true denial I've chosen ignore it, can a bad oil pump produce a knocking noise and chips similar to a rod brg? With 140K on it I'm trying resist pricey maintance items in lieu of just waiting for it to die and deal with it then

I think the knock has something to do with the harmonic balancer. It wobbles too much, maybe the timing gear behind it cracked and it is off center now. The strange thing is the knock has something to do with oil temperature. It is not there unless you drive the car and if you let it sit and idle for a while after a drive the knock goes away. I'll pull the timing cover next weekend and take a look. The good thing is I have a spare front cover, balancer, new timing gears and a chain.

Well I took the timing cover off this weekend. The chain was very stretched so I replaced it along with sprockets. Oil pump looked great. Replaced the balancer too, the new one doesn't wobble. The knock is still there when the engine is hot. I guess I'll just live with it. My oil looked good with no metal flakes so whatever is making the noise is probably not going to fall apart any time soon.

The oil is not the problem, it is Total / Elf 5W40 Synthetic. I almost wonder if it is the tranny and the sound resonates to the front of the engine.
