sourcing a 200/300 Tdi motor

For those of you running 200 or 300 Tdi motors in NAS trucks, how did you import them? (Or better yet, got one that you want to part with?) I finished a Perkins Prima swap in my 88 and am tempted to do something similar to my Disco. I do like the Prima - they're reliable and can be tuned for quite a lot of torque & power - but they're hard to find nowadays and a Land Rover diesel seems like a better choice for the Disco. Would appreciate any tips about getting my hands on one...

Defender folks are pulling them fairly often for LS conversions. Check NAS-ROW, they pop there fairly often for reasonable prices.

I think there was someone in the Arizona Land Rover Group with a 200 TDI available.

Thanks everyone for the tips. That 200 tdi with gearbox and transfer case on NAS-ROW is quite tempting as it's local and it came out of a disco. Probably not interested in a whole truck at this time, unless it's a cheap rusted-out donor with a good drivetrain.

picking up a used 200/300 that you havent seen run can be a real crap shoot. so many that i see coming over, even in running vehicles, are in need of major work. Whether it be rings, main bearings, injection pump, etc. Be willing to pay more for a package with a known history or warranty, or be ready to overhaul it. Also, while the 200 is similar to the 300, the 300 is much easier to work on.

Keep in mind that the newest 300TDI was produced about 23 years ago (not counting the subsequent International variants). It's not cheap, but you can get a professionally remanufactured 300TDI from Turner Engineering in the UK. In line with what @pdxrovermech said, you can pay more and get a quality engine up front or buy a cheap one and pay for it later. Depends on your skills, time, appetite, and budget. Also agree with the comment about the 300 being easier to work on, but if I recall the oil filter is easier to access on the 200.

I’d be patient and see what comes up for sale on NAS-ROW over the next few months. A number of the packages I have seen sold were by folks that installed them not long ago and then pulled for another swap. I bought one from someone that had it rebuilt by a well known reputable shop. He became bored with the 300tdi and replaced it with an LS. It had 6000 miles on the engine and gearbox. Also, there are shop owners that are well known and trustworthy that pull them for customer builds. They usually know the history of whats being sold and often have done maintenance and repairs on them prior to them pulling them and offering them for sale.

However, that 200TDI is OBO. You being local and being able to come get it, you might get a really good deal.
