I use FM for WNRN out of Cville and NPR. The rest is a constant repeat as you said.

I guess it's just us. I'm always able to find all kinds of unique stuff on radio, especially if there's a college nearby.

To the people complaining you hear the same stuff - isn't that what you're doing when you download things? At least with a radio station there's someone else choosing the music.

Between 88.1 and 90.9 is the sweet spot for more independent music.

I mean I worked in a bar. I probably saw 2000 bands live and have 5000 comped CDs from promoters - everything from TV on the Radio originals to the Killers. I saw Dresden Dolls play for 15 people long before they started opening for Nine Inch Nails, etc. I never bothered digitizing any of these promo CDs. Hell the last time I probably wore earphones I was 16 in 1989.

We had Sirius but talk about repetitive. They just make a playlist then repeat the same songs every couple of hours. It's super annoying on the 60s, 70s, 80s channels. There's three fucking decades of music and I'm hearing the same songs three times a day on road trips. It got to be where the only thing I could stand on Sirius is Joel Osteen and I hate everything he stands for, but he is a good storyteller.

Long live FM! I get that much of it sucks, but the work involved in paying a subscription service, then downloading shit just to listen to?

Seems like work to me.

With subscription services, you get to hear stuff you haven't before. And if I put my phone on shuffle it'll be days before I repeat.
I get the college stations, sometimes they play some decent stuff, sometimes they really suck. Depends on the DJ.
In my area the radio stations don't play anything new or unique.

This is what I'm talking about. Stuff you haven't heard before that is thrown at you because it's similar to stuff you liked before. I think Pandora is better at that. Maybe it's because you can tell Pandora what you don't like and Spotify all you can do is skip the song.

I can agree with this. What I notice is, I'll hear something I like, go look it up, and it's 5,6,7 years old. So first it's like how'd I miss that. Then, at least with the genres I listen to, it's mostly dated songs they're playing.

Guess I'm spoiled. We have this currently: https://spinitron.com/KAFM/. Last night on Electric Desert (we drove to UT to see the stars) heard a bunch of things I never heard before, new electronica stuff. Not my style really (last electronic music I was into was in the 90s with KMFDM, Front 242, etc) but nice to experience

Between this (88.1), 102.5 and the Classical channel (103.3) the other day on the way to the grocery store I heard part of Mozart's Symphony 29 in A, Neil Diamond's Longfellow Serenade, Three Degrees' "When will I see you again (Precious Moments)" a Bossa Nova version of Mack the Knife I had never heard before, Bryan Adams' Summer of 69 and some dude talking about how corrupt the Obamas are/were.

When I lived in DC I could pick up this station on the AM dial in my truck: https://www.zoomerradio.ca/. (AM750) It only came in late night due to atmospheric interference, but could pick it up from Quebec all the way in DC. It plays Louis Prima to Kenny Rogers. I can tell you without a doubt in the mid-late 2000s you could get lots of stinkfinger taking a girl out to rural MD and putting on songs that reminded her of the music her daddy listened to. From 11p to 5a the programs were Stardust, Midnight Blue and the All Night Jukebox.

I kind of thought sound quality wasn’t as good on Spotify but I didn’t say anything cause I couldn’t prove that. But Neil Young brought up sound quality with Spotify and wants them to quit playing his music cause of some podcast he don’t like

Neil is delusional. Love his music but come on. Cortez the Killer is a great song, and Will Tillery's band played it as part of a set at URE years ago, in the silver 110 double cab days. That was cool.
